PHYSICAL CONSEQUENCES
Even if the intention is not to permanently harm oneself, there are serious, and sometimes deadly, risks to self-injuring behaviors.
A common consequence of cutting is infection. The skin is an important barrier against germs such as bacteria and viruses. Cutting the skin breaks down that barrier and allows germs to enter deeper into the body. This is especially true if the object being used for cutting is not sterilized. The infection may be limited to the skin around the cuts (this type of skin infection is known as cellulitis). But germs that invade past the skin can cause the whole body to become diseased, resulting in fever, shock, and even death. Because of these risks, some infections may require treatment with antibiotics and hospitalization.
