7.1.2 Noise

Figure 7.2: Sonic The Hedgehog (1991). Noise channel. Interactive viewer available in the website edition.

Noise is a type of signal which is associated with interference. When outputted to a speaker, it sounds like static.

The SN76489 contains a Linear Feedback Shift Register or ‘LFSR’ which is fed with some input and cycled through to generate a pseudo-random signal. It does contain some parameters to switch between white noise and periodic noise, the latter steals the third pulse channel and feeds it through the LFSR to produce a bass-like sound (pulse at four octaves lower).

The oscillator used can also be altered to change the pitch, there are four options to choose from.

Games normally use the noise channel for percussion and/or sound effects.
