TWENTY-TWO

Dusk had fallen by the time Drew left Little Mysteries and got into her car. Soothing her impatience was going to take more work and practice. The amulet didn’t grant her an instant knowledge of how to do any of this. The gem had imperfections, and so did she. They were perfect together.

Focus and intention.

Push and pull.

She could do this.

She had to do this.

Sitting in the driver’s seat with the engine rumbling and heat blasting from the vents, she replayed the conversation with Celeste. Enid and Celeste had grown up together and been best friends. How did buying the keeper’s house at Neptune Point factor into Celeste’s plan to avenge Enid’s death? Unless Celeste planned to tear it down.

There was a part of her that selfishly longed for Enid’s return. She missed the friendship she’d developed with Enid in the short time she’d known her. Knowing Ori so much longer meant the sting of the inevitable goodbye would hurt even more when his time to cross over arrived. But Ori knew the moon gate’s location, and his presence was like a repellent to Hathorne. She didn’t know why or how, but his appearance had saved her more than once. She needed Celeste’s guidance, but Ori’s help was integral to defeating Hathorne. He was her connection to the other side.

When is the full moon?

A quick search on her phone showed the next full moon was December 27, eight days away. One week too long. She had time to do what Celeste told her and practice. Unless Hathorne attacked and won his deadly game before the full moon’s arrival. If she took a trip to Haven to see the gate for herself, maybe she’d know what to do. She gripped the amulet, reminding herself it would keep her here, in the world of the living, and send him back there. To the shadow realm.

A voice message notification flashed on her phone. Anna Tate’s enthusiastic voice expressed compassion about the fire and gave her a number for a contractor. She ended the message by telling her about an interested couple ready to see the house, fire damage and all.

The message should have triggered excitement in her but instead brought on nausea, and without thinking, she deleted it.

Driving away from the downtown core, she stopped at an intersection. She was the only car waiting at the red light. Her signal light clicked as the right remained red. The seconds dragged on as she waited for it to turn green.

She couldn’t go home.

The cleaning service promised she’d be back in the house by next week, but for now, she was in limbo. The next time she visited Atlas Cliffs, without a house to call home, this is what it was going to feel like. A restlessness crept up on her, making her doubt all the decisions she’d made since Gran died.

She could go back to her dad’s; he’d opened his home to her, ecstatic to help his daughter and be the support she’d needed for so long.
