Feathers itched beneath my skin waiting for release. The storm hid the coming sunset from view, but the last desperate rays of its energy held me in my current form. Daylight grew all things, but the night ate them. The night ate everything. There was no creation without chaos. I hugged my ribs and scratched at my back.

Soon, I told myself. Soon, the darkness would unzip my frail skin and free my true essence. My body prepared for it like the final lick of a lover’s tongue. But I couldn’t wait. The chase had teased the chaos in me to a mindless froth. My instincts dragged me through the quiet village, all the way to the edge of the hole.

My fingers and toes sharpened into shiny claws. My in-between state would have to do. I leaned over the pit. My scalp danced with the wild magic pouring from the aperture. Something more dangerous than an oversized snake lurked in that darkness.

I blinked at the blackness until I picked up a low, wavering light. My black sclera drank the shadows allowing my silver-ringed pupils to sift out shapes. The lower the sun dipped, the more details my eyes picked up.

Crumbling murals in native pigments stretched along curved walls. A cracked tile floor festooned with roots lay in muddy ruins below. The roughly football field-sized chamber inside the mound looked abandoned, but the smell alone told me it wasn’t.

A whip of light cracked the sky, chased by a roll of deep-throated thunder. The flash blinded me for a moment and conjured a choir of sizzling hisses from the darkness below.

Definitely not abandoned.

I gripped the edge of the stone ring and leaned farther in.

Jump! The chaos inside me begged, but something about those roots on the floor felt wrong. A suffocating vision spun to life of me buried under a writhing pile of nagas as they all sank their fangs into me at once. The chaos at my center howled to be flung into that fray, but my higher reasoning pleaded for patience.

Chaos. Patience. Chaos. Patience. I weighed them both in my mind.

Guess which one won.

I quickly measured the length of the opening against my height and braced my hands and feet against the stones. If anyone other than snakes lurked below, they now had a great view up my dress. I’d worn my white undies with the little red hearts.

Cute and sexy.

What? A girl’s gotta look good.

I clutched the spindly roots dangling from the chamber ceiling and tried to calculate a way to the floor that wouldn’t involve a broken bone. My skeleton was way stronger than a human’s but I wasn’t indestructible.

Go, go! The chaos screamed like a banshee in my head. I inched down along the roots and rain-slick stones, but I hadn’t balanced myself right. My left foot slipped out from under me and the shock of it loosened my tension against the stones.
