CHAPTER 5

I had a sudden flashback to the cruise ship on one of the final days when I had successfully followed my mother to the lower deck and discovered her love affair. Seeing the bizarre and unexpected image of my mother 69ing with another woman was one of the most unexpected sights to say the least. It was unbelievable that I was able to enter the room, see what I saw, then backtrack out of the room quietly enough not to be caught spying. Though, I think I was greatly assisted by the two women being very distracted by their activities.

Escape was not an option this time around.

“I—uh, I thought you guys were seeing the town,” I said as my mother guided me into the hotel room. The luxurious space was a wash of whites and light grays. The open layout of the suite hotel room led from the living area where I entered to the kitchen and dining area with a sliding glass door leading to the balcony at the far end of the room.

“Well, Amanda was quite tired and I had already seen the town so we decided to stay in,” my mother gave a devious smirk at her friend who quickly returned it as they walked me over to the large L shaped couch. “Let your father enjoy some peace and quiet as he explored. You know your father…”

“Yes, yes I do,” I said sitting down in the middle of the couch. My mother captivated my attention on the right as Amanda went around to the kitchen to top off her champagne. “Listen, I didn’t want to intrude on… whatever you had planned today… but I just… with everything happening between me and Bridget…” I gave a knowing side glance at Amanda in the kitchen to indicate I can’t say pregnancy.

My mother just smirked, “she knows.”

Wide eyed, I looked from my mother to Amanda who held up her glass of champagne to toast me and said, “Mazel Tov.”

The shock and worry collided like a car wreck in my mind but my mother only waved away the fear in my expression as if to say it’s alright, go on.

“Um… well, I had a couple of interviews with a job in Texas…” I said in a daze, my mind still reeling that my sister’s and mine secret is already spreading quickly.

“Texas? I thought you were looking at a job here, not too far away?” Darla asked.

“I was but this one in Austin is higher paying and at a better company. They offered me a position but…”

Darla gave a knowing smile as if she had just figured out the solution to an equation. “A job that you want to accept but feel guilty now that your sister’s pregnant.”

I winced hearing the words allowed in front of this stranger to me. Amanda came around the other side of the couch and placed three champagne glasses down on the coffee table in front of us.

“I just… I should be there for…” I started but was cut off.
