T homeas had one thing in his mind ever since he and Dorathia had reached Brothaig. It was her birthday the following day, and that could only mean one thing.

I must find her a nice present. It’ll make her happy.

There was no better place to find Dorathia a present than Brothaig before a day full of festivities. The merchants had lined themselves up in the streets, advertising their goods to all the people who had gathered there for the celebrations, and there were all sorts of trinkets for Thomeas to choose from.

The only problem was that he had never bought a gift for a woman before.

What do lasses like? A sharp blade, perhaps…many uses in a blade.

Thomeas himself would thoroughly enjoy receiving a nice blade as a gift, though he supposed that that was precisely the problem—he should avoid anything that he would have liked to receive for his own birthday.

Though he was a little lost, he continued to peruse the selection of goods that the merchants displayed on their carts, from food to intricately carved wooden bowls and cups. Even for him, who had seen many different places around the Highlands and many big towns, the selection was impressive, perhaps not because of Brothaig’s size—it wasn’t a very big town, after all—but because the festivities had drawn all the merchants there.

Then, as he looked around the carts, his eye fell on the cart of a merchant who was selling jewelry.

Now that is somethin’ that lasses like.

“Are ye lookin’ for somethin’ special?” the merchant, an older man with a thick beard and an even thicker waist, asked him. “We have the finest jewelry in the whole world!”

I doubt that, but who am I to argue?

“Aye…I’m lookin’ for a present for me l—a lass,” Thomeas said, correcting himself at the last moment. “It’s her birthday on the morrow, and I wish to give her somethin’ nice.”

“Anythin’ that catches yer eye, lad?”

Thomeas looked at the jewelry that the merchant had on display, the intricate necklaces and the sparkling bracelets, but there was one thing that he liked more than anything else.

There was a ring, a ring that seemed to match Dorathia’s pendant perfectly. Though it wasn’t the most impressive thing on the man’s cart, he knew that she would like it, simply because of the gesture.

“This one,” Thomeas said, pointing at the ring. “How much for it?”

“Eleven pounds,” the merchant said.

Thomeas forgot everything that he had to say. He stared at the merchant, eyes wide as he swallowed thickly, wishing that he had a chair to sit.

I could steal it, and the man would never ken. I could simply take it and nay have to pay a fortune for it.

He shouldn’t, though. Not only was he trying to leave that life behind, but he also knew that Dorathia deserved better than that. He couldn’t bring himself to give her something stolen.

“If that ring is eleven pounds, how much is that necklace?” Thomeas asked out of pure curiosity about the most intricate item
