Chapter 10
McCallisterâs mind seemed to split itself in two. There was the one side that told her she should be disturbed by the manâs presumption. What else had he presumed? Why was this personal? The other side, though, proved much louder. She felt the thrill of victory, the sense that she had finally thrown a powerful punch in her one-on-one death match with deception. Maybe it was simply the same kind of paradox she had recognized when talking with Greeley. Donât mess with me, but if you do, at least be a formidable opponent.
She read the salutation again, and then she said, âI got you, Faraday, and now you got me. Touché.â
She took the magazine and the letter and scurried to Faradayâs seat behind the desk. She propped up her feet and readied herself to devour what this time she had truly earned.
Detective Laura McCallister, I presume.
I trust that you have gotten this far by sleuth and not ransack. Well done.
I also trust that you are angry with me. The very idea saddens me greatly, but at the same time, I cannot blame you. My hands are cold from death, and yet, they have stayed clenched to your shoulders, trying to direct you where I need you to go. The chill will leave you soon. It is almost done.
First of all, let me tell you what I suspect you need to hear most of all. Yes, this is personal, but only because I need your help, not because I suffer from some deviant obsession. My own privacy is precious to me, and I would not and did not invade yours.
Many times, I have seen your name in the paperâ the detective who solves the mysteries in this sleepy little city that sometimes awakens in mid-nightmare. This is how I came to know you. This is how I came to respect your skill.
I met you only once with intent. Rather, Thaddeus A. Frederick made a point of meeting you. As him and with his enviable courage, I attended a self-defense workshop that you put on for seniors in the community. I just wanted to put a face and a voice to your name. Learning something to help this old man defend himself, well, that didnât hurt either. That is all.
Unintentionally, I spied you on many a Saturday morning in the front window at Timmerâs Book ân Bean. Coffee and a Christie. That is how I came to know your love of reading mysteries, your love of books. One of my own guilty pleasures, as well, and my only reason for allowing brave Thaddeus to slip into Timmerâs.
Also unintentionally, I saw you at an art show in City Square. That is how I learned of Holly and her exceptional talent. I saw how the two of you looked at each other. Your love for each other was palpable, even from my distance. I deeply regret that my life has come to a close without ever having felt that way. Cherish what you
