"Morning, Daddy."

I scrunch my eyes shut and pretend to sleep. A finger pokes my chest and tickles me. A groan escapes me as I bat the mystery finger away, which is weirdly accompanied by a hand. It feels like someone's tickling me with a feather. Like they want to make me laugh.

"G'back to sleep."

Fighting a yawn, I bury myself in my pillow. Sweet, sweet dreamland. Where the boy you adore sucks your thumb as you fall asleep and rests his perfect head on your chest.

The finger pokes me again. "Hungry."

With a groan, I force my eyes open. "I'm sleeping, baby boy. You're acting like my old dog."

Joey shakes his behind back-and-forth. "I loved Rover! He was the best doggy ever. I'm gonna pretend to have a tail like him and bark at you until you wake up."

I ram my palm in Joey's face. "Thirty more minutes of shut eye. Then I'll cook you breakfast."

Joey nudges his nose into my chest. "Arf! Me want pancakes!"

"Joey." Flipping over, I thrust Joey's chin up. "You're annoying me."

He makes a sad face. "I'm your alarm clock, Daddy. You can't get mad at me."

"I thought you were my old dog."

He scrunches his nose. "I'm that, too. Remember when Rover used to burst into your room and wake you up in the morning?"

"He slept in a kennel. He wasn't allowed free rein of our house."

"Riiiiiight." Joey quickly backtracks. "Well, remember when Rebecca let him out of his kennel and he rushed upstairs to give you good morning kisses?"

"Riley let him out of his kennel. Not Rebecca."

"You're missing the point."

"I have no idea what point you're making."

Joey can't help but whine. "I'm saying you can't get mad at me—like you can't get mad at a puppy. I'm only trying to wake you up so we can have fun today."

When he shakes his bum again, I find it impossible to resist the urge to roll my eyes. "Let's snuggle for thirty minutes."

His eyebrows tick up. "Good compromise."

"Come here, baby boy." Letting out a growl, I pat my chest. "Lay your head on my body while I wrap my big arms around you. Try to get some more shut eye."

Joey leans in and rests his head on my chest. "This is perfect."

I grab my hairbrush off my bedside table. "Do you mind if I use this on you?"

Joey's eyes widen. "Are you serious?"

"I bought this after I spoke with Nikolai. One of Christian's Little friends named Arlo has a Daddy who loves brushing his hair in pillow forts."

"Please tell me we're making a pillow fort."

A laugh escapes me. "Not this morning. Still, I'd love to brush your hair. You can drape yourself across my chest and relax while I do it. It's supposed to usher you into a calmer state."

Joey nods eagerly. "I'd love to."

Lifting my brush, I bring it to Joey's thick hair. I run it through his locks, taking my time. A few strands stick together, so I gently split them up.

A happy sigh springs free from my boy's lips as he submits to my calming motions.
