Chapter 6
The Bounds of Reality
Michael woke up feeling disoriented. His head hurt, and the last thing he remembered was being at DELFI with Major Hicks. He slowly opened his eyes, trying to take in his surroundings.
âLiz, heâs awake!â Victor shouted.
âVictor? Is that you?â Michael whispered, his mouth dry. He turned his head to the right; his vision was blurry, but he could just make out the silhouette of his friend. He closed his eyes again, trying to come to terms with the crushing headache. He heard the door open as Elizabeth and Major Hicks entered the room.
âDonât worry; the headache only lasts about an hour. Turn the lights down and close the curtains, Victor,â said Hicks.
âWhat time is it?â Michael asked drowsily.
âItâs after eleven, baby.â Elizabeth replied. Michaelâs vision was blurry, but he could still discern his girlfriendâs silhouette. âHoney, what did you do to yourself? What did you do?â Elizabeth pleaded. Her voice was pained, and Michael could tell she had been crying.
âYou mean I slept all day?â
âJust close your eyes, Michael,â Hicks insisted.
Elizabeth sat on the bed beside Michael and gently stroked his hair, relaxing him, and he tried to open his eyes again. âHow long did it take for the troops to fully recover from the implantation procedure, Major?â
âA few hours. Look, youâre in good hands. Iâm going to go home and get some rest myself. Iâll be back in the morning to check on you,â Hicks replied.
Michael smiled and bade the major farewell. It had been a trying night and day, and he knew he should focus on getting some well-earned rest. As Elizabeth continued to stroke his hair, he drifted off effortlessly. Victor left the room to give the couple some privacy.
***
Michael awoke to the sound of birdsong outside the window. The curtains were drawn, and a strange twilight flooded the room. He rolled over and turned to his left. Elizabeth lay asleep next to him, breathing gently. As his eyes focused, he observed that he was in the spare bedroom. The bedside clock to his right indicated that it was just after 6.00 a.m.
Once again, he turned to face his love; her hair partially covered her face, cascading onto the soft pillows. He noticed her complexion had a strange hue. Her skin seemed to effervesce in an unnatural fashion, glowing in an almost pale neon colour. As his mind strained to comprehend the phenomenon, he looked around the room to ascertain if there was any other source of light other than the dawn that struggled to seep in through the thick curtains.
âHey⦠hey,â Michael whispered as he gently shook Elizabethâs arm to wake her.
Her eyes opened slowly, and she smiled radiantly.
âI think I can see your aura! It looks like your skin is glowing,â he said, now taking stock of various light patterns that seemed to emanate from his girlfriendâs body.
As she smiled back at him, the light intensified; the strands of the light form began to drift towards Michael, much as smoke wafts in the direction of an air vent.
