Emet put the mocha in front of Mercedes and sat. “Feel any better?”

She took a sip and put the mug down. “I feel like an idiot.”

“So that would be better?” he said hopefully.

“I’m so sorry.”

“Don’t apologize.”

“I’m bothering you at work.”

“Slow day.”

“My family’s so Godawful, Emet. You have no idea.”

“I bet I do.”

“There’s nobody I could introduce you to if you wanted to meet them.”

“Okay.”

“And I suck at relationships.”

Emet chuckled darkly. “Me too. You could say.”

Mercey half-smiled. “Okay. You might have the edge on me there.”

“Score.”

“It’s just…” she trailed off.

“What?”

She sighed. “I have this stupid, stupid idea…I keep thinking that if I hang in there long enough they’ll come around.”

“Mm.”

“It’s not working out too good.”

“Everybody has a crazy family.”

She took another sip. “What’s yours like?”

Emet rubbed his knuckles. “I don’t have much in the way of relatives,” he said.

“No?”

“There’s my mom. In Boston.”

“Mine’s local.” She wrinkled her nose.

“Does it matter?”

Mercey put her cup down. “It shouldn’t.”

“But it does.”

“Yes.”

Emet brightened. “Hold on a sec—think I might have something.” He glanced at Eden Rose.

“Oh, my, look at the time,” said Eden Rose. “Take fifteen, Emet.”

Emet gave a shy grin. He slipped into the back room, one hand pulling off his hair net and the other yanking his apron string. He emerged a moment later, zipping up his windbreaker. “Ready?” he said.

Mercey stood. “Where are we going?”

“I have magical grandparents.”

They walked across the street, Serena padding at Mercey’s side. The sun was not yet visible, but the clouds glowed white, and in the park the puddles shone like coins scattered in a busker’s hat. By the fountain, Isadore and Daisy were doing close-up magic for a group of college students who were trying to figure out the trick. Isadore had just burned a card to ashes, then removed it, unscathed, from a young man’s hat. “Do it again,” said one of the students.

“Not on your life, son,” replied Isadore.

As Emet and Mercey joined the small crowd, Daisy’s mint-green eyes lit up. She pushed her way toward them, beaming.

“You must be the young lady Emet was telling us about,” she said. “I had so been hoping we would meet you.”
