BUILDING ON A SOLID FOUNDATION Jesus himself praised the virtue of perseverance, when he referred to all the challenges that his followers would have to face throughout the history of the Church. He promised us that, “the one who perseveres to the end will be saved” (Matthew 24:13). He also warned us that storms will inevitably come; we can’t avoid them. And he explained that only by living in obedience to his will, in faithfulness to his word and his grace that comes to us in springtime, can we endure them. To illustrate this point he used one of his most memorable parables. Here’s how St Matthew recorded it:

A Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock. And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed and was completely ruined.

—Matthew 7:24–27 Patience and perseverance are the virtues of our spiritual summers, the building blocks of that rock-solid foundation that allows springtime’s promises and hopes to mature into autumn’s abundant harvest. In the Conference, we will dig a little bit more into those spiritual autumns, as well as our spiritual winters, but for now, take some time to prayerfully reflect on the meaning of our spiritual summers, and how to live them well. The following questions and quotations may help your meditation.
