CHAPTER 7: WEDDING CRASHERS

ADRIEL

Three days later

Adriel faced Bone Daddy, trying to keep his cool with the glowering body shop owner. Paco’s scratched up snowmobile sat between them outside the rolled-up door of the auto bay. It was well before opening time, but Bone Daddy understood Adriel’s night shift schedule and never made him wait for business hours.

The dim glow of pre-dawn was stretching across the horizon, casting pale gold across the snowy hills around them. Tall, stately evergreens stabbed the heavens, sending a kaleidoscope of distorted shadows across the same hills.

“All I need is an estimate for fixing the damage. You know how this works. The PD is good for the money, but the tribal council has their process for the paperwork.” Adriel was exhausted after pulling his latest all-nighter. He just needed his blasted form signed, so he could drop it off by the council office on his way home. He’d transported the snowmobile in the back of his pickup, so he was all set to leave the moment Bone Daddy picked up his pen and made the appropriate ink marks.

Though an icy wind was whistling down the slopes of the distant mountains, the tough-as-steel sixty-three-year-old was in a sleeveless leather jacket that showed off his impressive collection of tattoos. He was a biker, from his long gray braid to his patched leather riding boots. Years ago, he’d ridden for the Inferno, but he’d retired long before they’d gone rogue.

His expression was stony. “And all I need to know before I sign is where you were when your rig got keyed.”

“Town Hall parking lot. I was inside the building when it happened, meeting with the mayor.”

“Thank you.” Bone Daddy mockingly waved his pen in the air. “After I sign, I’ll send a few boys down to Town Hall to take a peek around.”

“And I’m asking you not to.” Adriel was sorely tempted to reach over and lower the guy’s pen. “The last thing we need is to get in a spitting match with folks in Heart Lake right before our charity bike race. I’d much rather show them who’s boss on the trail.”

“They started it, Chief. It’s our right to finish it.”

“It’s not worth it. Trust me.”

Bone Daddy’s grin held no mirth. “Sounds like you might know a little more than you’re telling me about the situation.”

“I do.” Adriel’s jaw tightened. “Believe me, I wanted to sink my fist so hard into his mug that it would never pop back into shape.”

“One guy, then?”

“One guy, and he’s not worth going after.” Adriel paused before adding coldly, “Yet.”

Bone Daddy rocked back on his heels, nodding. “Tell you what. I’m in a negotiating kind of mood today. So, how about you agree to give me this fella’s name the day of the race, and I’ll sign your form? No more questions.”

“Fair enough.” Adriel nodded. “I’ll give you the name just as soon as our riders are rowed up all nice and pretty on the starting line.” By then, the wheels of justice would be rolling along fast enough that there’d be no stopping them.
