THIRTEEN

Monday afternoon, Zach had just finished his security patrols around the neighborhood, this time on foot. He liked the physical exertion of walking the same paths Dirk Bradley might be taking to scope out the area; it gave him a sense of getting inside the man’s mind. Plus, it allowed him to see things he might miss while driving in his SUV. Things like hiding places or spots where footprints might be easier to conceal. He’d just turned to make his way back to Marissa’s place when his phone buzzed with a text from her. Apparently, both she and Lydia were both stuck at work again and they needed him to pick up the girls at the bus stop after school. Hardly an inconvenience, since he was out and about already, so Zach turned to go to the bus stop to walk them home.

As he went, he remembered how nervous he’d been the first time he’d done this, the day he’d taken the girls to the mall. Funny how things changed. And while things were by no means perfect between him and his daughter, at least he and Lacy were on speaking terms now and had reached some sort of accord between them. He hoped it was the beginning of more in the future.

About two blocks away, he checked his watch, quickening his step. If he didn’t hurry, he’d miss them. Chances were the bus would already be there. Zach broke into a jog and rounded the final corner just in time to see a black sedan pull up to the curb near where the girls were standing. A vehicle he’d not seen around the neighborhood before. Concern jolted through him, buzzing in his nerve endings.

Oh no!

Running full out now, Zach shouted to Lacy and Charlotte, not caring what the other parents there thought of him. “Watch out, girls! Don’t get near that car!”

As he sprinted toward them, Zach bent slightly and squinted, trying to get a look at the man behind the wheel, but the darker tinted windows made it difficult. All he managed to glimpse, when the guy leaned across to the passenger side to talk to the girls, was a mess of longish, light blond hair, a scruffy beard, and geeky looking black glasses. His pulse thundered along with the thoughts in his head. Dirk Bradley, at least in the last photos they had of him, had been known for his slick designer suits and perfectly coifed dark hair, always going for the rich and powerful business executive vibe. There was a possibility the man wasn’t Bradley at all, and the guy wasn’t blatantly trying to make a play to abduct his daughter. Then again, the blond, shaggy hair and beard thing could all be a disguise too. It certainly looked clownish, at least from where Zach stood.

Whatever it was, his gut told him something wasn’t right, regardless.

Zach hurried over to the bus stop, heading for the driver’s side door to confront the bastard, but just as
