Chapter 10
(Duncan)
The importance of clear and honest communication
Duncan had been a Daddy for many years. Heâd dealt with simple calamities, like a pet whoâd accidentally dyed his hair green two days before an important job interview, to more complicated ones, like helping a little navigate the tricky intricacies of probate court. Through it all heâd maintained his composure and kept his focus on seeing that his partnerâs needs were met, but something told him that what he was going to learn tonight was going to test his inner calm in a way that it hadnât been tested in years. Someone had been messing with his pet. That was the one thing heâd been able to discern from the conversation in the dressing room, and because of that heâd struggled to focus on the booths in the bazaar.
Ember had been the one to wave the white flag less than an hour after theyâd left Ms. Angeliqueâs booth. Of course, it had helped things along when Ms. Angelique had pointed them to a friend of hers who specialized in attire for littles. When Ember had gotten a look at the dungaree jean shorts with the words Pupâs Best Friend embroidered across the front, heâd fallen in love with it, bouncing when heâd seen that it had an embroidered tail on the seat. Together theyâd selected an apricot-colored t-shirt for him with matching striped socks and a classic little Dutch boy cap made of cloth and denim that completed the ensemble beautifully.
âI donât need to see anything else,â Ember signed. âThis will be perfect for the Parade Beneath the Stars.â
âAre you sure you wouldnât like to look at the booth with the stuffies?â Duncan asked, torn between wanting him to have fun and enjoy the bazaar heâd been looking forward to and getting them back to the room where he could sort out what was going on with Rusty.
A simple shake of the head was the only answer Duncan needed and when Rusty attempted to tell Ember that there was no reason to cut their shopping short, Ember shot him such a fierce look that even Duncan had to take a step back.
Yup.
Time to go.
Fortunately, they had several wonderful buffets on board where they could load up takeaway containers and be on their way with minimum effort and plenty to dine on once they were ready for it.
Now they were in what amounted to their stateroomâs living room, Rusty and Ember on the couch with Duncan settling in the chair across from them, their takeout containers on the coffee table between them along with a carton of fruit, spongy cakes and yogurt Duncan had selected for dessert. Luxury class had its perks, especially when it came to creating a homey atmosphere.
Their drinks were sparkling lemonade this time, each with a flavor blend for now and one in the fridge staying cold for later. He texted Theo, so heâd know not to look for them at the bazaar, then put his phone on do not disturb on top of the dresser, right beside Emberâs and Rustyâs.
