Since the 1990s, there has been a lot of work on developing good photodetectors that work at optical or infrared wavelengths. Many of these use similar principles as the Geiger counter. Something has a high voltage applied to it, and when one or more photons arrive, it goes click. We use the latest version of this technology in your smartphone. Your phone’s camera is composed of millions of pixels, each containing a charge-coupled device (CCD) detector.21 This array of CCDs replaces the light-absorbing atoms in the old photographic film and allows the photo to be taken and stored digitally. We call the entire photodetecting apparatus a CCD array, as shown in Figure 4.10.
