The Mother Superior wanted to see me.

No further details in the brief, brisk letter that my daughter brought home. She stood there, smoking as I folded the sheet and tucked it back in its envelope.

“Care to tell me what this is all about?” I asked. “Or shall I wait and be surprised.”

“It’s not—” she shook her head.

She actually blushed. This was new.

“Come on,” I said. I took the cigarette from her fingers and gave it a drag. I smiled at her. We were friends, we were accomplices.

“The girls wanted to see my tat,” she said.

She had gone for a garter tattoo, circling her right thigh. Tasteful, black lace and scarlet ribbon.

“And?”

She shrugged. “We went to the bathrooms, during recess—”

I snorted a burst of smoke as I chuckled. “You’ve been caught with your pants down?”

She blushed to the dark roots of her bleached blond curls.

“It’s a little more complicated than that,” she said.

I gave her a look. “As in—?”

She shrugged. “They liked it,” she said. “Bea liked it. She wanted to touch it. To feel how it feels—”

I handed her back her cigarette. “Are you into girls?”

Her blush deepened. “I don’t know.”

She looked up at me. “But Bea was certainly into me when they caught us,” she chuckled.

“Oh, shit!” I blurted.

We laughed for a moment.

“You’re not mad?” she asked me then.

“Why should I be? It’s OK to experiment.”

I went to the bar closet and poured two vodkas. “You’re not the first, you know,” I said, handing her her glass.

She took a sip and then looked at me. “You mean you—?”

I sighed. “What am I going to say to the Mother Superior?” I asked.

Her eyes widened. “You did!”

I sighed. “Everybody does. Don’t believe those girls that tell you they aren’t.” I gave her a look and lit a cigarette. “We’ll talk about it later.”
