Chapter Nine

Christina listened to the ringing tone purring in her ear. "Oh, hello," she said, leaning on the phone box door as a woman answered. "Is Don there, please?"

"Don?" the woman echoed. "I'm afraid he's out. May I take a message?"

"Yes, thanks. This is Sally. I can't make it for our usual drink but..."

"Your usual drink? I'm sorry, but I think you must have the wrong number."

"Oh," Christina breathed. "I must have misdialled. I wanted to speak to Don Ponting."

"Er... In that case, you do have the right number. Who did you say you were?"

"My name's Sally. We usually meet for a drink and then go out but I can't make it."

"Did he give you this number?"

"No, he didn't. Actually, I got it from the college. I'm a student there. You must be Don's mother. He's told me quite a lot about you."

"His mother? Er... Yes, that's right. So, how long have you known Don?"

"Oh, we've been going out together for about three months now. He obviously wants to keep it quiet, seeing as I'm a student. But we're very serious about each other. Has he not mentioned me to you?"

"Yes, yes he has."

"Well, I'm sorry to have troubled you. I hope we meet before long."

"Oh, we will. I can assure you of that."

"Sorry again for disturbing you. Goodbye."

Leaving the phone box, Christina ran back to the flat and raced up the stairs. With stage one of her plan completed, she took a bottle of wine from the fridge and grabbed a glass. Bryony was due in about half an hour, giving Alison plenty of time finish her makeup before going out for the evening. Christina hadn't mentioned Bryony's visit in case Alison decided to stay in and join the sexy fun. As luck would have it, she'd decided to go and see a band playing at the local pub.

"Oh, you're back," she said, appearing in the kitchen doorway. "Did you make your phone call?"

"Yes, I did. And it worked perfectly."

"Tell me about it later. I want to get a good seat at the pub. If I turn up late, I'll end up standing for the entire evening."

"When are you going to tell me about that man who called last night?"

"It's nothing, Christina. Just some man I used to know, that's all."

"You seemed pretty worried about it."

"Did I? Oh well, there's nothing to worry about. God, look at the time. I'd better go."

"OK, have a good time."

"Are you sure you won't come with me?"

"I can't, Alison. I have so much work to do that I'm just going to have to stay in."

"Right. Well, don't work too hard. I should be home about midnight."

"OK, see you later."

The scene set, Christina opened the wine and filled her glass. Bryony's visit would be fruitful, she was sure as she imagined Ponting getting home to his questioning wife. Ponting was going to have a hell of a job explaining things to his wife. And once the woman had heard that her husband had been caught in the woods with Bryony with his trousers down, all hell would be let loose.
