“You know, I should have realized this was a fecking trap. When I was informed that sunlight wouldn’t be an issue. That alone should have tipped me. As a vampyr being of over five centuries. I would know of a location that mitigated daylight that effectively.”

Fuming, I paced in the clearing around the vortex. The chilly night air tickled my flesh. The temperature was noticeably different from Louisiana.

“There are no forests like this on earth. Aye, ye probably could have known. Yet I gather you have your mind over occupied.”

Alice said in a cheery tone. I didn’t deny the accusation. She was clued to my romantic life. While I was not painting signs, nor was I attempting to hide my affections for Aurelia. The truth was, too many people have gleamed Aurelia’s pent-up little secret. It wasn’t my job to tell her how to manage her affairs. It was simply mine to support her when everything eventually came out. Sexual identities always washed ashore. Often when you least expect them. The best thing I could do now was honesty and openness. Things that didn’t always come naturally to me. My past was a constant enigma to the rest of my species. So, deception and distrust were far more commonplace to me.

Worries over the soon-to-crash sky in Aurelia’s world would have to wait. The thorny razor-briar coiled in malicious vegetation around the large clearing surrounding the vortex to earth.

The primary reason the fae courts couldn’t hold ownership over these woods was they were too vast. The massive number of troops it would require living on high alert at all hours didn’t justify the likelihood of mass casualties on an annual basis. The Dark Forest had claimed more souls than all the fae wars combined. Yes, that is an accurate mathematical calculation.

Beasts as old as the fae planet roamed these dark woods.

“Ye do know why these are called the Dark Forest?”

Alice asked me and I nodded in confirmation.

“Because it’s the only forest in all of Fairey which is nearly unlit.”

I told her, reciting the line straight from my Fairey history text. Alice wiggled her hand side-to-side.

“That’s technically true, however, the real reason is that it is also the place where the Lycanthrope curse was created. This is the product of the unintended consequences of the darkest magiks in Fairey history.”

My eyes bulged under the revelation. The wolves had mentioned this place was their genesis. However, I hadn’t realized they meant so literally.

“So, the reason they come here for the Equinox?”

I asked, and she shrugged and said, “Because they are drawn here in great times of calamity or upheaval. Every time the world shifts around them, the Lycans retreat here to put their affairs in order again.”

Alice explained, and the reasoning made more sense now. The Apex could not stop this trip if he wanted to. However, he could rope in an unwitting vampyr former queen and her friends.

“I’m still going to make a bloody boxing bag out of his testicles.”

I declared, and Alice giggled.
