Chapter

The room Amy has led us into buzzes with suppressed anticipation. She supplies us with glasses of champagne and kisses us both on the lips, before returning to the reception area.

Several people raise their glasses in Cass’s direction, and she plays the part with coy waves and sexy winks.

I whisper in her ear, ‘Cass, what is this? Tell me right now!’

‘Honey, honey,’ she strokes my arm soothingly. ‘Relax. I didn’t want to tell you about it before because I didn’t want you to freak out. But I just know you’re going to love it.’

‘Love what?’ I ask, although I’m beginning to suspect what the answer will be.

‘It’s a special club, only for gorgeous people, like you and me,’ she giggles. ‘And for … liberated people like us, that like to have a bit of fun.’

‘Oh, God, I’m totally freaking out right now.’

‘Seriously.’ Cass catches my face between her hands and looks into my eyes. ‘You’re going to love this. It’s so much fun. It’s nothing we haven’t done before, it’s just …’ She kisses me, sweeping her delicate tongue around my mouth. ‘New and exciting.’ She smoothes back my hair and smiles. ‘Give it a go, for me?’

‘Okay,’ I smile, my whole body buzzing from the kiss. A voluptuous brunette catches my eye as she walks by and pauses to whisper in my ear.

‘I love your dress. And your hair,’ she breathes. ‘You’re really sexy. May be I’ll see you later?’

Cass watches over her champagne glass, her eyes gleaming with the devilish mischief that I know well.

‘See, isn’t this exciting?’ she whispers into my other ear. The brunette walks away, casting a lingering glance over her shoulder.

She’s right, it is exciting. Deciding to surrender myself to the experience, I perch beside Cass on the arm of a vast white leather couch and survey the room. The harshness of the large space is subdued by breezy lounge music.

‘You weren’t wrong,’ I say. ‘Everyone in here is really gorgeous.’

‘It’s no mistake,’ Cass replies. ‘It’s part of the entry criteria.’ ‘Seriously?’

‘Yeah, you have to send in a couple of pictures, face and body,’ Cass explains. ‘To weed out the uglies, I guess.’

I raise my eyebrows, forcing her to continue with the obvious explanation.

‘I sent in some photos for you,’ she shrugs.

‘Which photos?’ I say shrilly. A few people turn and look curiously in our direction.

‘Look, darling.’ Cass smiles at the people and turns to face me, brushing my cheek with her hand. ‘Don’t worry about it. We’re here now, let’s just enjoy it, okay?’

‘Okay.’ I have to admit, there’s no sense in agonising about a few photos now. In fact, I think, I should feel thankful that they didn’t reject me.

We’re certainly in delicious company. Around fifty women and half as many men circulate around the large room. The women are an amazing variety of types for a small group: curvy, thin, tall, short, brunette, blonde. Looking around, I realise that every taste is catered for by the cross-section of women present. There
