Saving Connor

109

As much as Rodrik hated it, he and Chek couldn’t approach

Connor now. It would just make things more complicated.

But as they stood there in the gardens, the sound of voices reached

their ears. Rodrik immediately identified the talking people as the four men they’d left behind in the office.

“Look, I’m not sorry for what happened between me and Rallion,”

Connor was saying. “I won’t apologize for it. But…I just don’t know

what’s going on.”

The human sounded so very confused that Rodrik’s wolf burst

out, aching to comfort his mate. A low growl from Chek alerted

Rodrik to a similar feeling from his friend. “Let’s just go to see

what’s the matter,” he suggested. They could do that much without

crossing the boundaries between work and personal life.

Chek silently nodded and gestured to the light coming from the

glass doors at the second level of The Red Star. A small balcony lay

just beyond it. Icy wings sprouted from his back. He obviously meant

to fly closer in order to see inside.

Rodrik gave his partner a look of disbelief. “Are you mad?

They’ll see you.”

“I suppose you’re right,” Chek mused. The wings dissipated in a

flash of cool white. “We’ll climb. It’s stealthier.”

Rodrik nodded and made his way in the direction of the lit

window. Once they were beneath it, he climbed on the wall and

started scaling it, using his claws to help him. A few feet away from

him, Chek did the same. The distance between them and the balcony

wasn’t great, so they reached it in record time. Their luck held as they noticed some extra space between the glass doors and the outer edges

of the balcony, which meant they could linger there without being

spotted.

The angle allowed them to see inside without taking too much of a

chance. The elven princes and the man named Rallion might have

been able to sense them, but they seemed too distracted with Connor.
