Rescued Again

Bertha’s world became bright again with the arrival of a telegram in January 1944. Her parents had escaped from Germany! They had traveled through Portugal and Spain and finally reached England. They would be in Yorkshire on her twenty-first birthday.

“That was the most wonderful day of our lives!” Bertha said.8 In the five years they were apart, Inge had forgotten most of her German. Theo spoke English far better than his native language. Their parents were older, tired, and beaten down. But all five were together at last, and that was joyous.

The children had vowed to keep their ordeal secret, but Bertha ended up sobbing the entire story to her mother the first night they were together. Her parents were outraged. They had not sent their children to freedom to have them enslaved in a home. They immediately contacted the refugee committee.
