Cole tucked the bedding up and around Lucky with Dooley’s help.

“They honestly believe in the notion that misery loves company.”

“We’ll keep watch with you.” Dooley shooed Doc away. “I’m not

due for anything at dawn, so I’ll take the first watch.”

While Dooley settled into the couch to sleep with a secondhand

sleeping bag, Cole lay down on his full-sized bed next to Lucky. His

breathing was shallow but strong. He hadn’t opened his eyes or made

any noises since Doc and Dooley doped him up for the removal of the

shot. Still, he was alive, and for that small miracle, Cole was grateful.

He tried to keep his eyes open just in case Lucky needed him, but

sleep pulled hard at his eyelids. Eventually, Cole gave in. Or at least

he was fairly certain he had. It must have been a dream because

nothing else explained why he and Lucky were standing at the foot of

his bed. Their forms were solid, but he knew it wasn’t quite right as

they had no real substance.

“Would you really do anything to save him?” asked the one who

looked exactly like Cole but for the clothing. He was buck naked and

seemed oblivious to that fact.

“I would do anything.”

“You love him that much?” the human Lucky asked.

“Of course I love you that much.” Cole tried to reach out to

reassure the form of Lucky, but Lucky stepped back, as did the image

of Cole himself. Cole sensed there was something not quite right with

these images of himself and Lucky. There was a gut knowing that they

were self-serving. Not evil like Edwin and Hector. Not like that. They

weren’t malevolent, but still, they weren’t quite wholesome, either.

He couldn’t put his finger on the exact cause of how he knew, but it

was there all the same.

“If you really loved him, you would want him no matter what

form he took, yes?” the Cole image asked.

Baffled at this curious conversation with himself, Cole rose and

faced himself head-on. “What do you want? Don’t play around with
