Chapter Seventeen

Jack

Iwanted so badly to lose myself in Dahlia’s scent, her body, and fuck her last night. The only thing that stopped me is that I want to take my time with her.

“I’m driving you to work today, Bee,” I grunt, yawning as I mainline coffee like it’s my job. Dolly and I got in late, and then it took me a while to wind down after I took a shower. Fuck me, I can’t believe that asshole came all over her bedsheets and then urinated on her clothes after he cut them up.

Although, it could have been a group effort. Those men are disgusting. Belmont is filled with people who are legitimately struggling, but her roommates enjoyed hurting my girl. I hope Frankie can’t get an erection ever again and he pisses funny for the rest of his life.

“Are you feeling protective today, Jack?” Bee asks knowingly. She knows me better than she thinks, which makes sense since we’ve been living together for the past four years.

“Something like that,” I mutter. “Dolly’s apartment situation was a lot worse than she said. They jerked off onto her bed and pissed on whatever clothes she had. I may have shoved my stun gun in her roommate’s dick.”

“I hope he can’t piss right ever again,” Bee says immediately, making me smirk as I finish off my coffee. “I need to take her shopping for clothes, and a part of me is glad I have an excuse. On the other hand, that’s fucking disgusting. Can you imagine if she went home alone?”

“It was one of my first thoughts when I saw it,” I admit. “The area is rough. We walked there after she talked to her previous boss, and I can’t believe she walked it alone after work each night. Dolly is a tough cookie. So yes, I’m feeling pretty protective right now.”

Bee finishes her toast with a nod, and picks up the thermos filled with coffee that I made her. “I’ll allow it,” she teases me easily, winking.

God, I really have been an idiot when it comes to her. “I haven’t said it, but I love you,” I tell her, tugging her into the kitchen with me. “I’ve been an asshole over the last four years.”

“And I’ve been really fucking broken,” she says. “The hardest thing has been not wanting to get invested, to fall in love with you. The push and pull has been really confusing.”

“I haven’t had a relationship since college.” I sigh, pulling her into my arms. “As self aware as I try to be, I’ve felt as if I’ve been trapped underwater. Everything feels both muted and sharp, and Dahlia felt farther and farther away. It hurt so much, so I tried to convince myself that if she wanted to find us, she would.”

“You’re hiding us a lot better than you’ve been pretending to yourself,” Bee says, amused. “We were both hurting enough to believe she could find us.”

Nodding, I nudge her out the door and down to the garage to the truck.
