RYAN HADN’T ACCOMPLISHED much in his office. Mostly he’d listened to Suzanne’s movements about the house. He was glad she’d invited him to tell the children goodnight. It made him feel a part of the family, at least.

Now it was way past bedtime. But he was afraid to go into his own bedroom. Not until he was sure Suzanne was asleep. What if she was waiting up for him? If that was true, then all he was doing was causing them both to lose sleep.

He stood and crossed to the door, turning off the office light. After a deep breath, he went next door to his—their bedroom. He started to knock. Then he reached for the knob. It was still his room, too. He didn’t have to knock.

The first thing he saw was Suzanne in his bed, sleeping on the side he always occupied. The light was dim, coming from the bathroom. But he could clearly see her outline in the bed. She was sound asleep.

He crossed to the bathroom and prepared for bed. When he came out, he snapped off the bathroom light and made his way to the other side of the bed. He slowly slid under the covers, trying not to awaken her. Apparently she was a sound sleeper, because she never moved.

Once he was stretched out, his head on his pillow, he took stock of his situation. He wasn’t alone. His wife was sharing his bed. It wasn’t exactly what he’d hoped for, but it would help him keep his daughter.

He reached over and found warm, soft skin. He instinctively turned toward her. He wasn’t alone anymore.
