Chapter
Twenty-Two
A tiny, dilapidated cabin emerged between tall oak trees, their leaves turning sienna, copper, burnt orange, and pale yellow. Ivy vines grew along the porch, coiling around the rails and snaking over the wooden slats.
I cast Fane a wary glance. âPlease donât tell me thereâs an evil book hidden in the basement of this place thatâll raise a psychotic demon.â
He rolled his eyes. âYou canât summon a demon that way. Everyone knows that.â
A snort slipped out. âWow. You made a joke.â I reached up and put my palm on his forehead. âAre you feeling okay?â
Fane grabbed my hand and pulled it down, his thumb absentmindedly tracing over the scars on my wrist before he let it drop. âLoganâs not the only one with a sense of humor. I do have one. Youâre just so hellbent on pissing me off that you rarely see it.â
My feet crunched under the leaves as we approached the porch. âIâm leaning into my strengths.â I jerked my chin toward the cabin again. âWhat is this place?â
âIt belongs to an elder wolf who might have answers about this link.â His gaze dropped to where the sun tattoo remained hidden under my black shirt. âIf the Infernal Sol is solely responsible, she canât help.â
âThen weâd have to go to a demon.â I chewed on my bottom lip as we climbed the stairs together. âMaybe Ruin would know.â
Fane scowled. âMust we talk about your boyfriend?â
âHeâs not my boyfriend, prick. We kissed, like, twice.â My time at Ruinâs seemed so long ago, but it hadnât even been a week since I fled while Princess Venna sent her demons to snatch me out of the lab.
He raised his hand to knock, but the door swung open, revealing a tall, slender woman with long waves of silver hair and skin so thin and pale blue veins showed through. Her loose pants hung off her hips, and the lilac sweater swallowed her tiny frame. âFane Maverick. Iâve been expecting you.â She stepped out of the shadows, and the sunlight stippling the forest hit her golden irises as they seared right into me, attempting to read my soul. âAnd you must be his partner, Tatum Teague.â
âUh, partner?â I peered at Fane, and he just shrugged. âHow did she know my name?â
âI didnât tell her,â he said into my mind. âShe just knows things.â
She waved us in, and I stepped into a quaint room, the scent of apples and nutmeg sifting through the air. An array of plants spotted the room, and a lumpy sofa had been moved against a wall, but the scuffs on the hardwoods made it clear it usually sat in front of the large brick fireplace.
âThanks for seeing us, Cirilla.â Fane reached into his pocket and pulled out a dainty gold necklace. âI thought youâd like this.â
A smile tipped her lips, intensifying the wrinkles around her eyes. She took it from him and examined the glittering jewelry. âThank you.â
I gave Fane a curious look when she turned. âIs she a freaking leprechaun?â
He gave an exasperated sigh.
