As soon as Erminio pulled onto the main road, he snatched the microphone from its holder on the dash. âUnit two to unit one.â
Mikeâs voice immediately came out of the speaker. âGo ahead, unit two.â
âWeâre ten-eight from Padillaâs, en route to the Seven-Eleven. When weâre done there, weâll be ten-nineteen.â
âTen-four, Erminio. Weâre on a ten-nineteen right now. ETA in about three.â
âTen-four, boss.â Erminio replaced the microphone.
Roger shook his head. âEvery time you pick that thing up, you talk in numbers. I donât have the vaguest idea what youâre talking about.â
Erminio gave him a blank look. âItâs just the radio code. Ten-nineteen means going back to the station. Ten-eight means Iâm back in the car, and I can take a call.â
âWhat about seven-eleven?â
Erminio eyed him curiously. âDonât you know what a Seven-Eleven store is?â
Roger burst into laughter. âWith all those numbers, Iâm not surprised I blew it. Oh, well.â Then, catching a glimpse of the gloomy expression on Erminioâs face, he realized he was laughing alone, and his hilarity vanished.
Erminio slowed behind a car turning into a liquor store. âJosé and Doreenâwere theyââ He finished the sentence with a motion of his hand.
Roger frowned. âI think so, but I canât be absolutely sure just on the basis of what we saw in the store.â
Erminio shook his head. âJoséâs usually a real friendly guy. Doreenâs his little girl. Usually, she smiles a lot, and sheâs real happy. Theyâre not like they were just now. And José never used to read that kind of stuff.â
âYou mean that porno magazine?â
âYeah. José got up a petition once to make the grocery store stop selling Playboy. Howâhow can it change people so much?â
âYouâve got to remember that itâs not really the people you know that youâre dealing with. Sure, itâs the same face, the same body, but youâre dealing with something elseâsomething using that body.â
âI guess Iâm glad I didnât see Cora when we were at my house. I wanted to see her to make sure sheâs okay. But Iâm glad I didnât see her the way she is.â
âCora and everybody else can be just like they were before. Their personalities are still there. Theyâve just been suppressed by the possessing spirits.â He tried to sound reassuring. âDonât worry. If thereâs a way to bring the spirits here, thereâs a way to send them back. All we have to do is find it.â
Erminio gave him a look that showed just how hopeless a task the policeman thought that was. Then he looked away. âWhy are you helping us?â
Roger thought for a moment. âWell, I suppose a big part of the reason is because Iâm fascinated with the occult, and if nothing else, this place is certainly a hotbed of occult activity right now.â
âYou could just watch.â
Roger smiled. âIâm not getting off that easy, huh?â His smile faded. âI know you have some doubts about me because Iâm a Satanist. But, believe me, we both want the same thing. Iâm not planning to betray you or Mike or even the town.
