As soon as Erminio pulled onto the main road, he snatched the microphone from its holder on the dash. “Unit two to unit one.”

Mike’s voice immediately came out of the speaker. “Go ahead, unit two.”

“We’re ten-eight from Padilla’s, en route to the Seven-Eleven. When we’re done there, we’ll be ten-nineteen.”

“Ten-four, Erminio. We’re on a ten-nineteen right now. ETA in about three.”

“Ten-four, boss.” Erminio replaced the microphone.

Roger shook his head. “Every time you pick that thing up, you talk in numbers. I don’t have the vaguest idea what you’re talking about.”

Erminio gave him a blank look. “It’s just the radio code. Ten-nineteen means going back to the station. Ten-eight means I’m back in the car, and I can take a call.”

“What about seven-eleven?”

Erminio eyed him curiously. “Don’t you know what a Seven-Eleven store is?”

Roger burst into laughter. “With all those numbers, I’m not surprised I blew it. Oh, well.” Then, catching a glimpse of the gloomy expression on Erminio’s face, he realized he was laughing alone, and his hilarity vanished.

Erminio slowed behind a car turning into a liquor store. “José and Doreen—were they—” He finished the sentence with a motion of his hand.

Roger frowned. “I think so, but I can’t be absolutely sure just on the basis of what we saw in the store.”

Erminio shook his head. “José’s usually a real friendly guy. Doreen’s his little girl. Usually, she smiles a lot, and she’s real happy. They’re not like they were just now. And José never used to read that kind of stuff.”

“You mean that porno magazine?”

“Yeah. José got up a petition once to make the grocery store stop selling Playboy. How—how can it change people so much?”

“You’ve got to remember that it’s not really the people you know that you’re dealing with. Sure, it’s the same face, the same body, but you’re dealing with something else—something using that body.”

“I guess I’m glad I didn’t see Cora when we were at my house. I wanted to see her to make sure she’s okay. But I’m glad I didn’t see her the way she is.”

“Cora and everybody else can be just like they were before. Their personalities are still there. They’ve just been suppressed by the possessing spirits.” He tried to sound reassuring. “Don’t worry. If there’s a way to bring the spirits here, there’s a way to send them back. All we have to do is find it.”

Erminio gave him a look that showed just how hopeless a task the policeman thought that was. Then he looked away. “Why are you helping us?”

Roger thought for a moment. “Well, I suppose a big part of the reason is because I’m fascinated with the occult, and if nothing else, this place is certainly a hotbed of occult activity right now.”

“You could just watch.”

Roger smiled. “I’m not getting off that easy, huh?” His smile faded. “I know you have some doubts about me because I’m a Satanist. But, believe me, we both want the same thing. I’m not planning to betray you or Mike or even the town.
