SIXTEEN
âListen up, everyone. Stop what youâre doing,â Stephen Danskin shouted to his team as he and Rick Kinnear emerged from the Superâs room.
He clapped his hands. âSTOP! LISTEN, PEOPLE: WE HAVE NEW INFORMATION!â he shouted even louder.
They stopped and trained their eyes on him.
âWeâre scaling back the review of CCTV footageâ¦â
âScaling back? Why?â Lucy asked.
âHowâs that gannin to help us?â Todd Robson added.
An irritated Danskin said heâd told them to listen, not speak.
âWe have a prime suspect. His nameâs Noel Gowland. Heâs a sparky who does work at the theatre. Heâs also Semilla Rachmanâs ex-boyfriend.â
He pulled up a second whiteboard and began scribbling details.
âDI Parker will still be co-ordinating activity here, but hereâs what that activity is going to be. Now we know who weâre looking for, DCI Kinnearâs team will use facial recognition software to scan the crowds around the exterior of the Customs House.â He noted the board accordingly. âThe Super believes thereâs still mileage in researching activity on and around the Shields ferry terminal. Obyegoâs the one charged with that.â
Danskin took the opportunity to pause for a moment. He checked his team were fully focused, which they were once Trebilcock set down a half-eaten pasty.
âI want Dexter to continue looking into the background of everyone on Sophia Ridleyâs list. Gowland may have an accomplice â the note said, âweâ, remember; indicating thereâs others involved. We need a complete check across social media for all Gowlandâs posts, on-line friends, owt like that. Phone records, too. Theyâre your jobs,â he pointed to Trebilcock and Gavin OâHara.â
âWhat aboot me, guv?â Todd Robson interrupted.
âYouâre there to support everyone else until we get the go-ahead.â
âGo-ahead for what?â
âThe warrant to search Gowlandâs house. The Superâs on it already. Once it comes through, youâre coming with me to search the place.â
A smile broke across Robsonâs face. He cracked his knuckles. âExpecting a bit of trouble, guv? Iâm your man for that.â
âAye, I know you are. Thatâs why Iâm coming with you. Youâll knock seven bells oot of him if I let you loose.â
âSpoilsport,â Todd mumbled.
âOkay everyone: I want us on this until we know more about Gowland than his own mother.â

The boat pitched and tossed amidst a frenzy of waves. Below deck, Semilla clung to the bunk with her one good hand. Micky steadied himself by flexing his knees for balance whilst hanging onto the table with both hands. The other man sat on the wooden floor, sliding back and forth at the maelstromâs whim, constantly thrown against the hard surfaces of the cabin.
âShe is going to survive this, isnât she?â Micky asked. He saw Semillaâs eyes widen. âI mean the boat: not you, man.â
âYouâre supposed to be the seaman here,â his colleague pointed out. âYou tell me.â
âYou arranged to get this boat. Surely you know its seaworthiness?â His words were almost drowned out by the creaks and groans of the vessel as it strained against the elements.
âItâs my cousinâs mateâs boat,â the man said. âHow would I know?â
âJesus, man. What if he fancies a dayâs fishing or summat and finds his boatâs disappeared?â
âHe wonât.
