Chapter 11 - Rayla

The instant the doors to the Throne Room opened, Rayla knew that this had been a mistake. For a moment, she even entertained the idea of turning on her heel and fleeing in the opposite direction. But she was too slow… and then the eyes of the Queen’s Court were on her, and she had no choice but to walk in. She held her chin high, hoping nobody could tell how hard her heart was beating. The Palace staff had organized a few changes of clothes for her. The deep blue gown she was wearing had felt like a good choice for a royal audience that morning, but she felt suddenly clumsy and overdressed.

There he was—Leander, the man from the cave. That same strange electricity was crackling through her as she felt the weight of his gaze settle onto her body, and she hid the shiver that ran down her spine when she reached the front of the room and turned to meet his eyes. He looked away immediately, and she saw his jaw tighten with unmistakable rage. Rayla’s heart sank, and she quickly redirected her gaze to the Queen and her long table of advisors, hoping they hadn’t noticed the awkwardness of the interaction.

“Rayla, thank you for joining us,” Queen Lana said smoothly. She heard Leander exhale sharply at the sound of her name and felt her smile falter a little. “Our guest has had a long journey through the Fog—all the way from Margrav. I’ve taken the liberty of telling the Court a little of your remarkable story,” the Queen added. But before Rayla could respond, she heard Leander clear his throat and take a step forward.

“Forgive me, Your Majesty, but I can’t stand by and let this—creature—claim a name so dear to my heart.” His voice was flat and controlled, but she could hear the unmistakable undercurrent of the same rage that had driven her out of his cave after they’d made love. Could that really only have been yesterday? “Whoever or whatever is standing here before you, it isn’t Rayla.”

A murmur of shock went up among the gathered dragons, and Rayla felt a cold dread settle into the pit of her stomach. Was this what she’d been brought here for? To be attacked and humiliated again by this man—this time in front of a royal audience?

Queen Lana, ever the diplomat, held up a hand for silence, her expression serene and untroubled. “You have more to say?” she prompted Leander. Rayla risked a glance sideways at him, but he seemed determined to pretend she wasn’t even there.

“I do,” he said firmly. “I’ve been briefed on the situation regarding this woman’s arrival, but let me make sure I understand the situation—she claims to have simply appeared in Margrav a little over three years ago?”

Queen Lana’s eyes flicked over to Rayla, and she nodded helplessly. Her daughter had been born not long after, which made keeping track of time much easier.

“Then they can’t be the same person.
