Over a sink, Elaine's trembling chest hung, sobbing. “I'm sorry I brought you here today, Jessica. Don't know why I thought this would be a good idea.”

Jessica shivered, leaning against the cold, tiled wall. “This therapy sucks.”

“Yeah, like I said last time, this guy has no idea what he's doing or how to deal with people like us.” Elaine splashed water on her face and then fervently searched her purse for a box of cigarettes. “He's an amateur who likes seeing us suffer.” She dried her hands and tapped the found box on her palm till a single cigarette fell out and sparked it to life. “We're like a freak show to him.” She took a long drag and held it in. “He gets off on our damage.”

“I guess, but what happened with you? You were yelling at that guy.”

“He was saying terrible things to me.”

“I told you, he didn't say anything.” Jessica checked her phone, and quickly responded to a loving text from Steven with a series of emoticons. “Is he someone you recognized from the flight?”

“Yes and no,” Elaine told her. “All faces look familiar after you've seen them more than once.”

Jessica waved the trailing smoke from her face. “Has this happened to you previously since the accident?”

Elaine puffed hard on the cigarette then extinguished it in the sink. “No.”

“Was it a flashback?”

“Jessica,” Elaine paused. “It was my guilt.”

“Guilt over what, exactly?” Jessica stepped within striking distance of Elaine.

“I was only able to save a handful of people from the plane,” Elaine cried again, fishing for another cigarette. “And I'm haunted by the faces of those I couldn't help get out.”

Jessica twisted uncomfortably, recalling those she saw on the flight when a safe landing was expected. “I understand.”

“I have to go, Jessica,” Elaine stated. “There's no way I'm walking back in there after that.”

“No argument from me,” Jessica replied. “I hate it here, too.”

“Do I have to drive you home?” Elaine ran her fingers through Jessica's hair like she'd been given an invitation. “I'd love it if you'd spend the afternoon with me at my place. I could use the company.”

“Yeah, sure,” Jessica told her, clicking on her phone. “As long as Steven knows where I am, it's fine.”
