An hour later the doorbell rang. Jamie’s heart thumped in his chest, but when Daddy motioned for him, he obediently followed him to the door. “Hello, Roy. Good to see you. So your little boy is here tonight? Come on out, son. I won’t bite.”

Daddy reached an arm back and pulled Jamie around to his side.

“Manners,” Roy prompted.

“How do you do, sir?” Jamie said, making the little bow Daddy had taught him.

“I’m charmed, Jamie,” the visitor said, He looked Jamie over hard and slow. And he did seem charmed. Jamie blushed with pleasure.

“He’s lovely, Roy. And such nice manners. You’ve done a wonderful job raising him.”

Daddy thanked his guest and turned to Jamie. “This is my friend David. You may address him as Dr. David. He’ll be staying through dinner, and since you’ve decided to stay downstairs this evening, I expect you to be on your best behavior.”

“Yes, Daddy. I’ll be very, very good,” Jamie promised. Then he bowed again to the guest, and to Daddy too. The two men laughed, making Jamie beam in happiness.
