An hour, two ‘bathroom breaks’ into the house, and a complete tour (twice) of the property later, we had to admit defeat. The foreman was right. There was nowhere on this property to bury a body— at least not one that had both concrete gravel and had been dug up recently.

“So, do you want to keep trying, or are we done?” he asked, his annoyance written on his face.

No. I gave up, turning away from him and walking back to Brecken’s car. It was rude, but I let Brecken handle the ‘thank yous’ while I pouted. Eastbrook, or Louise, helping Earl clean up the body by using that house had been such a good option. Solid motives all around. Louise lived right behind Earl. He could’ve just knocked and begged for help. She knew of the house, still under construction from her work with the mayor. It had been perfect.

Then again, she had been there that morning when the police came to Earl’s house. She’d even been there at a truly ridiculous hour of the morning. So how could she bury the body, get rid of the car, and be there to clean up? She’d have to be a superhero. Maybe it was all too convenient, anyway.

Brecken sighed loudly, drawing my attention as he walked to the driver’s side door. “Are you convinced?”

“I’m willing to admit that this wasn’t where she was buried. Begrudgingly.”

His lips twitched suspiciously. “Not every lead pans out.”

No, but usually when I got this excited, they did. “Sure.”

“Don’t worry. Your gossip will give us someone else.”

Gah! Now he was just patronizing me. “Get in the car.”

He tried to hide his laugh by jumping in the car, but it was unsuccessful. He was amused that I wasn’t solving this one easily. But if the mayor’s house wasn’t the site of the buried body, then Louise very likely wasn't a suspect anymore. Not that I was letting her off the suspects list. One: my suspects list was a little thin, and two: I’d learned that the least likely could be the murderer.

I fell into the car, debating the information I’d gained so far. Earl and Megan had a weird relationship, one where she’d driven away all his friends, but somehow had prioritized mending the break between him and his old girlfriend. He beat her when he was drunk but was completely non-violent when not drunk. And to end it all, his old high school friend had ended up with her car, but Earl was too drunk to have done it and the friend didn’t have a reason.

Then again, he wasn’t the only one who’d gone to school with him…

“How old is Isaac?” I asked suddenly, pulling out the file like it had the answer. It didn’t.

“I don’t know. About the same age as Earl, I think,” Brecken answered, turning on the car and letting it warm up while he checked his phone.

“So, he might’ve known Earl’s friend, too, then?”

Brecken froze, his head slowly turning to me as his eyes told me he was thinking.
