CASH BOX REVISITED

Everything okay?” Sunshine asked eventually, watching me stand off to the side after my phone call with my dad.

Bess and George continued to play ring toss, completely oblivious that I was even off the phone or that Sunshine was no longer attending to their game.

“Totally fine,” I said.

“What did your dad have to say about being a judge?” she asked.

“Not much. No big deal.” I suddenly questioned Sunshine’s interest in the scholarship. There was something she was keeping secret. “He’ll be here soon, and I’ll talk to him more in person once he arrives,” I said.

“That’s good then, right? He’s still going to be a judge?”

“I don’t know. I think so. Maybe not. We’ll talk when he gets here.” I was purposely being vague and trying to keep her confused until she dropped this line of questioning. “Sunshine, I have a question for you.” I squared my shoulders.

“Sure. What’s up?” she asked.

“What is your big secret?” I asked, stepping closer to her, moving into her space, providing a feeling of pursuit and pressure, which sometimes played a psychological game on people, pushing them to telling the truth. “I know you’re keeping something from me, and it’s time to tell me.”

“Excuse me?” she asked, her face twisting into surprise. “What exactly are you asking me, Nancy?”

“I think you know something that you aren’t telling me. I just don’t know what it is yet. I don’t know if it’s about the sabotages or the scholarship applicants or what exactly. I just know that you’re keeping something from me.”

Sunshine moved back to Bess and George, collecting more rings for them to toss and bustling around so as to avoid answering my question. I would have pursued her for an answer, but just then I heard loud voices shouting from the ticket booth across the school grounds at the entrance to the carnival.

I looked at Sunshine, smiled apologetically, and then hurried away from the ring toss and over to Ned’s station at the ticket booth. My only thought and great fear was that he had fallen asleep again and was getting yelled at by Mark Steele or Mara Stanfield.

I would be back at the ring toss soon enough to get to the bottom of Sunshine’s blushing, a telltale sign that she had been lying to me.

At the ticket booth, a small group of angry adults and frustrated kids were gathered.

My handsome Ned Nickerson stood tall and strong between Mara Stanfield on his left and Mark Steele on his right. Everyone was talking at once. Their voices were loud, and each gestured wildly with their arms and hands. They shook their heads and stomped their feet at various times to indicate displeasure.

It wasn’t until I got closer that I was finally able to hear what was being said and who was saying what.

“Stop,” Mara said.

“Mara, you don’t have the right to stop me,” Mr. Steele said.

“Is everything okay?” I asked Ned.

Ned held the cash box in a white-knuckled grip. Clearly he hadn’t fallen asleep, nor had he lost the cash box, which was a great start to this scene.
