Chapter 28

Tess glanced around the room, realising there was too little space to swing her bat properly. Her eyes found Liz and the knife she had pushed through her belt loop, then Ollie holding his crowbar, as if he could stab with the straight end of it.

I need a knife. The soldiers had them strapped to their legs.

Tess felt the floor rumble with the many sets of feet pounding their way to them. She lunged into the hall and ducked for the nearest of the dead soldiers.

She had maybe three seconds before she’d get trapped out there on her own, so she didn’t waste any time watching for zombies. She locked her eyes on the body at her feet. The knife was right there, and thankfully, not underneath his body. It was strapped to the top of his thigh and on show for her. It had a small leather clasp over the top of the handle, so her fingers found it in the first second and flicked it up.

In the next second, she wrapped her fingers around the rough grip of the blade and yanked it free. Then, in the last second, she pushed up to her feet with the knife in one hand and her bat in the other as the first of the dead came into view, snarling teeth through a face of long hair, as if straight from a horror movie. And this isn’t a horror movie?

She pushed away from the body and darted towards where Liz and Ollie watched on with their eyes mouths hanging open. They may have been shouting something, but Tess hadn’t heard a thing over her own heart and the chorus of hungry monsters. Ollie’s muscular arm reached towards her as his face turned towards the doorway of the flat. She pressed her hand into his and let him drag her into the room, pulling her out of the way so Liz could go to town on the first of the dead.

Liz used the huge knife in her hand to plunge a deep hole straight up through the underside of the chin and into the brain of the once human. The knife was in and out faster than the next zombie could get to her, so she repeated the action, not having to shift her grip as the first collapsed at her feet.

Ollie pressed forwards, swinging his crowbar high over his head whilst Tess recovered. No room to swing a bat or to stab at the temple meant only one way to do this. She charged forwards and used the same technique as Liz, pushing her long blade up into the skull through the base of the chin.

Zombie after zombie appeared, trying to force their way in through the narrow gap. Their fingers clawed for purchase on the walls and the humans in front of them. The hand of a short zombie latched on to Ollie’s thigh, making him cry out in shock whilst he grappled with a massive guy higher up.
