“We’re going to have to cut Ruin Winters loose.”

I stopped mid step when I heard my name. Her name.

I was still in the hall. I could creep closer and no one would know. Eavesdropping was on the rules list, too. But that was a rule everyone broke.

“I know we had hoped to get to her first…” it was the stranger talking. I covered my mouth with both hands to keep a growl in.

I was growling? What the fuck was up with that?

“… they are going to put a bounty on her head…” A bounty? What did that mean?

“… hunted by every psychopath in the city…” my heart pounded so loud it was getting hard to hear.

“… you want it to be your bullet or someone else’s.”

They… they would kill Ruin. They would kill Ruin when they found out.

Silent feet took me back down the hall and behind the door.

I stood in front of the linen closet. An ache in my stomach doubled me over. I got on my knees, tucking my damp hair back. My breathing got faster, harder. I winced when the ache sharpened. I pushed through and tucked myself in the closet.

Don’t fucking do that again.

I swallowed down acid that was creeping up my throat. As soon as I was out of the closet, the pain lessened. It was true, you had to obey or it hurt. I looked at the closet, my hand covering my mouth to hold in a sob. I’d disobeyed Cross.

I didn’t trust my legs. Crawling, being close to the ground, was safer. I looked up at the huge bed and squeezed my eyes shut. I curled into a ball and pushed myself half under the bed. Immediately, some of the jagged edges of my nerves softened.

I didn’t understand this either. Why it made me feel… safe…

I reached up and slid the piece of paper out from between the slats of the bed. I unfolded it and smoothed out the creases.

I ran my fingers over the blues and greens, like I could touch Cross, touch them, through the marker and coloring page I stole on my first night here.
