Chapter Twelve

Elizabeth changed into her sapphire gown for the evening. She freed her hair from its confinement and allowed it to spill down her back in long soft curls. Examining her appearance in a full-length mirror she saw a tall, slender woman with deep red hair and a peach complexion. Dark green eyes met hers forthrightly from under sweeping brows in a heart-shaped face. Her lips were full and perhaps a little bruised from last night's activities. She looked every inch the fallen woman.

David entered the room as she was studying herself. He stood behind her and she could see that he was a head taller, a foot wider, and looked entirely like the wealthy aristocrat he was. He was dressed in blue britches so dark as to almost be black, a matching waistcoat and gray greatcoat. His thick blond hair was pulled back from his face with a leather cord.

"You have grown conceited," he said, meeting her eyes in the mirror.

Elizabeth smiled. "I wanted to be sure my appearance would please you," she said. "Harlots must please their lovers, mustn't they?" She turned around to look up at him.

"Indeed," he said. "Perhaps I would like you to please me now."

Elizabeth continued to look at him. In the lamplight she could see desire hardening his face, darkening his eyes. It had taken a great deal of time to dress, and she was a bit sore from the previous night. Still, to have him inside her again…

"Tell me what to do," she said. "Will you have me here? In the coach? Perhaps I shall be this evening's entertainment…"

"Enough," said David holding up his hand. "I think we should go to dinner. You will have to amuse me without parting those pretty legs for a change." He held out his hand and she stepped forward to take it.

Harry's home turned out to be an upper flat in Soho. All the apartments shared a single central hall, and had a dining room and parlor that faced the street.

A servant answered the front door and led them up the narrow stairs, through the darkened parlor, and into the dining room. Sean the Irishman and Thomas the Scot were already eating dinner while Harry, seated at the head of the table, pressed more wine on them.

Felice met them at the arched entrance to the candle-lit room, sending their footman away with a nod. She was dressed in a form-fitting corset and chemise of black with an overdress of red silk. Elizabeth could detect no shift or panniers beneath the dress and was shocked. The woman might as well be naked before the assembled company. But then this would not be a group that required modest dress in a woman.

Felice took David's arm, pressing her breast against it as she led him around the table to sit on Harry's right. She pulled his chair away from the table and, as he seated himself, took a folded square of linen from the table and draped it across his lap.
