A webquest is not an ill-defined search along the digital superhighway. Rather, students follow links identified by the teacher in order to answer specific comprehension questions about a particular topic.

To structure a webquest, teachers should create a guide that identifies specific links for students to explore and specific tasks to accomplish at each Internet location. Required and optional links within structured webquests provide an opportunity for differentiation within the assignment; teachers may require higher-functioning students to complete more of the activities or require students with different learning strengths to perform different aspects of the group’s webquest task. Many websites can assist teachers in developing webquests; some of these are presented in the following feature box.

There are many advantages to using webquests in the classroom. First, students seem to be more motivated to research and study a topic when they are able to complete their assignment on the computer (Cote, 2007). Webquests also allow students to discover information for themselves instead of just hearing the information presented via discussion, lecture, or other traditional delivery. Webquests are likely to foster higher levels of student engagement with the learning content than pencil-and-paper tasks.
