Chapter Nine
Jentzen waited until Jovi shut the bathroom door, moving swiftly to the table where Sylvia had placed the food. Everything looked normal, but he wasnât taking any chances. He grabbed the tray and opened the door, meeting Cannon at the entrance. They switched trays quickly. âGreat minds think alike,â he said.
âYeah, right. I figured it was a safe bet youâd want your girl to have food that was watched from the beginning to the end. I followed her down to the cafeteria. She ducked into a nursesâ station. I canât say for sure if she did anything to the food, but itâs very suspicious. Iâll have all this sent off to a lab we work with. Better to be safe than dead, I always say. Roq picked up the same things sheâd bought while I played Follow the Cray Cray.â He rolled his shoulders, placing the tray into a huge silver foil bag.
âThank you, both of you. I gotta get back inside. Anyone following Sylvia to see where she goes?â Jentzen asked, eyeing the hallway where the nurse had disappeared moments earlier.
Cannon shook his head. âNo, not yet. Weâre closing another case, so we canât spread ourselves that thin unless we have proof sheâs a danger. If this food comes back tainted, then we will have probable cause. You better get going. I just saw a shadow pass under the bathroom door.â Cannon took a step back, motioning behind Jentzen.
He stepped back inside, shutting the door behind him, and turned toward the table. Jentzen replaced the new tray on the clean space and quickly fixed the bed, ensuring it was straightened.
Jovi came out with her hair brushed into a high ponytail, wearing a clean nightgown. He bet sheâd love to take a shower.
âYou didnât have to do that,â she said.
âI know, but I know how much nicer it is to slide into smooth sheets.â After dozens of missions where theyâd slept sitting up, standing up, or lying on whatever surface was closest...hell, sometimes they didnât sleep for days. Heâd gained an appreciation for a smooth bed.
âI wonât even ask for details, knowing how it was with Kuda.â
His fingers itched to help her into the bed when she struggled to maneuver into a comfortable position. The moment he watched her face crease in pain, he moved, lifting the sheet and helping to reposition her into the center. It was shocking how tiny she was, especially when her personality made one think she was...much more. Hell, he didnât know how to explain it, but Jovi gave off an HBIC aura. Not that heâd tell her that to her face. Nope, he liked his nose where it was and didnât doubt for one second that sheâd rearrange his face if he pissed her off.
âBetter,â he asked, stepping back out of hitting range.
She looked up at him with a narrowed gaze. âYou are so fortunate Iâm in this bed and comfy. Thank you. Um, will you slide the table over here?â she asked sheepishly.
