CHAPTER 13

IN DREAMLAND WITH COLLEEN

Over the years, Wayne got to know all of the neighbours in his street. Most of the boys had played football together outside, or at The Gems – before school, after school and into the evening until it got too dark.

But there was one particular neighbour that Wayne did not get to see as often as he wanted – Colleen McLoughlin. She was one of the prettiest girls he had ever seen, and the McLoughlin and Rooney families knew each other well. In fact, Wayne’s cousin Claire was one of her friends. The two families met up a few times a year for barbeques and birthday parties. The McLoughlins were Liverpool fans, but any rivalry was friendly.

Even though the families were friends, though, Colleen didn’t speak to Wayne much. He wasn’t sure why. Maybe it was because he had accidently broken her brother’s tennis racket a few years ago. He had apologised and explained how it happened but she obviously hadn’t forgotten it.

Colleen was never rude to Wayne, though; she just had different interests and she chose to spend her time with other girls. When he was playing football, she was usually at a dance practice or an acting lesson.

Unfortunately for Wayne, his progress through the ranks at Everton would not be enough to win her heart. He knew her brothers but she didn’t usually hang around with them. And the few times that she did come and watch the football in the street, she didn’t seem impressed by Wayne’s attempts to show off.

It was going to take something special to attract her attention.

‘Oh come on, get me a date with her,’ he begged her brothers on a regular basis. ‘She doesn’t care about me playing for Everton. I don’t know how else to impress her.’

They passed on the message. ‘Tell Wayne he can call me if he wants to ask me out,’ Colleen told her brothers. ‘He shouldn’t get you to do it for him.’

‘Why don’t you come and see him tomorrow night? We’ll be playing footie again after school.’

‘I can’t. I have a dance class. But I’ve seen him in the streets, yelling and showing off. All he talks about is football. I don’t like boys like that.’

A few weeks later, though, the perfect moment finally came about. Wayne was busy doing what he usually did on a week night – playing football in the street. Then two girls appeared on a bike. And one of them was Colleen.

With sweat pouring down his face, scuffed shoes and a bloody cut on his elbow, Wayne realised he didn’t look his best. Not that he ever spent much time styling his hair or picking out fancy clothes. That just wasn’t him.

‘Hi, Colleen,’ he called, pushing other boys aside to make sure she saw him.

Colleen waved back, but she was distracted by a problem with the bike. Something was wrong – Wayne thought maybe a tyre was flat or the brakes had given up. He was worried for her.
