Jonathan blanched. His face slowly went all the way to white. âAnriluka,â he muttered. Then he passed out, falling back onto the couch, his head at an uncomfortable angle. This news, on top of his wound, proved to be too much for her Guardian. Heâd been under a lot of stress lately, ever since the being crossed over into their Realm. It was strange for Jonathan to take so much time in solving such an important mystery, but at least one mystery had been solved today. Shari had thought heâd been worried it would have something to do with her task, but now she wasnât so sure.
Anriluka, like all of her race, was prone to cruelty, but Shari felt that she would be easy to defeat. The only problem she could see in defeating Anriluka was the lack of time. Of course, time was something that, according to the curse, she didnât have.
Hissing under her breath, she muttered, âTen days. Vebnahâs breath. How in the Nine Hells am I going to succeed this time?â
âWith our help,â Mitch said firmly, gesturing to Jonathan and himself.
Shari paused for an instant. She met Mitchâs eyes. Determination flared out at her. Shari realised that at this moment, she could dismiss the half-baked plan of Jonathanâs. More fighters, more patrols, more training, all leading up to an Altoriae Guild. No other Altoriae had needed one before her. However, things were getting harder. There were more attacks, with greater ferocity as well as frequency. Even the Handbook confirmed it. If the number of battles she fought continued increasing as they had been the last few years, she would need the help of more than just Ronahâs residents.
Sighing, she nodded slowly. Maybe the Altoriae needed to be part of a group of fighters, rather than a lone assassin amidst hostile masses. âSounds good to me. Do you have any ideas?â
The tension Mitch carried in his shoulders relaxed as he took in a deep breath. âWhy donât we wake sleeping beauty here, then we can get to figuring out whatâs on the self-destructing parchment.â
Jonathan woke with a grumble when they nudged him. âI canât believe you left me here,â he muttered, picking himself up and stretching, trying to work the kink out of his neck.
Shari sent a pulse of green light towards him â something that seemed to be a regular occurrence as of late.
Melodious voices filled Shariâs head. âWe shall soothe him now,â said the past Altoriaes. âWatch out for Anriluka. She is unusually cruel,â one voice broke off to say. Shari took a shaky breath and cleared her mind, trying not to show any sign of how talking to the past Altoriaes affected her.
âSo, what did it say?â Mitch asked after Jonathan stopped glowing.
It finally clicked for Shari that he didnât understand. âI donât know the exact translation, itâs too old. Basically, thereâs a curse that started when the being crossed over, and I have to find a âThorne red jewelâ and kill an Uâtan called âAnriluka.
