We were gathered, somber yet hopeful. Willa placed a white candle in a holder in the middle of Marita’s cauldron and filled it with water so that the candle extended above the rim and above the water.

I spoke. “Visualize a dark spell.” I lit the candle. “Now visualize the spell being broken.”

Marita recited a spell:

Be gone now and hear my verse

The time is now to break the curse

May it be gone and this hex undone

As quickly as it had begun

So mote it be

I stepped back from the alter to join the others in a circle and felt healing, protecting energy swirling within me.

“Let’s join hands,” I instructed. “Watch the flame. Circle our combined energy. If you feel any negativity, remove yourself from the room.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the glow of Willa’s hands, which were holding onto Alder and Micah’s. My best friend was far more powerful than any of us realized. I saw David glance over at her in awe.

“Everyone concentrate,” I reminded them.

We watched the flame extinguish when it met the water. Marita let go of me and Marco to pick up the cauldron.

“The candle and water must be buried in the earth. Preferably near the front entrance of your home, David,” Marita instructed.

“I’ll grab a spade,” he said.
