Chapter Twelve

Gage’s words had sliced deeper than a knife. In all her life, Hope had never met any man so infuriating. Insulting.

But damn hot. Bold. Generous and perceptive.

She unzipped her sweater—his sweater—and took it off. Tossed it across the room. Paced back and forth, needing to get the blood moving in her legs.

The worst part was the attraction to him tugging at her to go back into the living room and hash this out.

She shouldn’t have lied to him about Ryan. The sheriff did love Faith, planned to marry her, that was true, but he’d wanted nothing to do with Hope’s plan. He’d called her all the things Gage had.

Ryan didn’t want her to end up like Faith. Hope had had to guilt-trip him into helping her.

Not her finest moment, but she was so close to avenging her sister now. She just needed those letters.

She’d anticipated Gage would be upset, but after he implied something offensive, she couldn’t admit she had roped Ryan into her scheme.

Gage was different. He’d offered her his help, no strings attached, with such conviction and dedication it left her breathless in amazement.

Calling him a good man wasn’t meant as a platitude or to butter him up to speak to Ryan. Nor had there ever been the right man under any circumstances. In less than two days, she had come to trust him as she had trusted no one since Faith. She’d never felt so close to a guy. Tethered to something that wouldn’t crumble to dust. She knew little about him, but on the other hand, she knew him better than her longest boyfriend or anyone in her life. Understood what was at his core, his character, the nature of his spirit, the essence of his heart that dictated his actions.

To do what he was doing for her, surely, made him exceptional. Singular. The right man for her, and she wanted him so much.

The bedroom door flew open, and Gage stalked in.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “For, well, everything. I shouldn’t have been such a jerk. You could’ve lied about the accident and simply said Faith’s fiancé would worry, but you were honest. It’s just the idea of something happening to you, deliberately, makes me physically sick and—”

Hope threw her arms around his neck and kissed him. No hesitation. No flirting.

Curling his arms around her, he spun her and pressed her against the wall. He kissed her deeper, harder. So completely that heat overwhelmed her.

She lifted her head to get air and smiled. “You had me at sorry.”

“Really?”

She nodded, melting against him. “Really.”

“Z always said a sincere apology could solve most problems and that men were idiots. Who knew she was right?”

“Who is Z?” An old girlfriend? An ex-wife? Someone who still meant something to him?

Gage flashed her one of those grins that made her belly quiver. “Unimportant. I’ll tell you later.”

He lowered his mouth to hers, and she welcomed the touch of his lips. What started out as sweet turned rough, hard and blistering as he pulled her closer.
