Chapter Fifteen

Tara and Sella had initially wanted to return to the caves that day, but they lost track of time at the mall, and before they knew it, it was time for dinner. They loaded everything in the orc car – clothes for Tara, some essential cosmetics, soap, a hand mirror, perfume, and a lot of snacks. Tara had insisted to buy Sella a dress, and they’d managed to find something that fit. It was a long, summery dress with a sunflower print, and even though it was shorter on Sella, it looked good on her. They also bought themselves new mountain boots, then headed back to the hotel, ordered more pizza, and watched a documentary about incredible homes all over the world. The next day, they woke up early and hopped in the car for a rather long drive.

They reached the Blue Ridge Mountains after lunch.

“We’ll have to leave the car here and continue on foot,” Sella said.

Tara sighed and hopped off. “I know.” She looked at the other two orc cars that were parked between the trees, away from the road, expertly masked by leaves. “What about our stuff?”

“We’ll ask Nakk to take some grunts with him and carry all of it up the mountain.” She eyed the pile of bags and boxes. “It’s no job for two ladies who’ve just tasted the good life at the spa.”

Tara laughed out loud. “Give me a bag of chips, though. I’m hungry.”

They each took a bag of chips and a bottle of water and started up toward the caves. It was a half hour trek, and they moved fast, feeling relaxed and rested after two nights at a good, rather expensive hotel, and a whole day of pampering and shopping.

“We should do this more often.”

Sella smiled. “You know what? I agree. Your world is not that bad, after all. I mean... as long as we don’t have to interact with your family. Your family is pretty bad.”

Tara didn’t say anything. Sella was right, and she wasn’t going to defend her parents in front of her. In fact, she wasn’t going to defend her parents or her friends ever again. She was done with them, with the past, and with everything she’d left behind. When they reached the clearing in front of the cave mouth, she went to the first orc in the horde and asked where she could find Rogan.

“The captain is out hunting. He shouldn’t be far.” The orc looked up at the sky to see where the sun was. “They should be coming back soon. We have to roast what they bring for dinner.”

Tara clapped in excitement and turned to Sella. “I’ll go find him.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’ll meet him halfway.”

“Huh. You have a lot of energy today.” Then she addressed the other orc: “Is Nakk with him?”

“Yes.”

“Then find two more grunts and go down to our car. There’s some stuff that needs to be brought up.”

“All right.”

Seeing how Sella had everything covered, Tara sprinted into the forest, knowing very well the places where the horde liked to hunt.
