Chapter 15

Will she turn up?

Sometimes this Omega seems like water. Something he can’t grasp in his hands, can’t contain, can’t hold. She keeps slipping through his fingers and there is a very big part of him that suspects she won’t show tonight.

It doesn’t help that she has insisted on picking him up. An attempt probably to rub his nose in any Alpha bullshit he might be housing. He hasn’t risen to it. If she wants to play games with him, he’s more than a willing participant.

However, now he realises the ball lies firmly in her court. She can ghost him, leave him peering out his window like a pathetic loser.

He spins his phone in his hand, trying not to peer down at the screen, at the minutes ticking by and the blank screen. No messages.

Leaning back on the couch, he picks up the guitar resting next to him on the cushion. Cradling it in his arms, he strums his thumb over the sharp strings. The notes sound tart in his ears, and he tightens the tuning knob, listening until he is satisfied with the pitch of the note.

Occupying his hands in this manner, letting his mind quieten and his ears fill with music, has always been some kind of calming influence.

Back in the early days, he’d replaced this with too many drugs and too much booze, using those instead to calm his nerves, still his thoughts. But it was never as effective as this. There was always the accompanying fall. He never has that with the music. Not when he’s discovering new music, pulling it slowly from deep within him — like a magician pulling colourful ribbons from a hat.

He smiles, thinking of that visual. His music is hardly PG13-safe. It’s raw, dirty. It’s why that song about the girl in the red dress, and all the sordid things he wanted to do to her, caused such a storm.

At the time, Sweet Desire’s new video was going viral. Each member wrapped in a bright jewel coloured dress. Nat green, Tanya blue, Ruby red.

He’s always been elusive about who the woman in the dress was but rumours started and her band wasn’t happy.

Yeah, the song was pretty damn dirty and raw. Like him. Perhaps he keeps it hidden beneath the laid back facade, but it’s in there.

The buzzer blares and he shakes his head, coming back to himself. For a moment, he holds the guitar, then places it carefully beside him and rises to his feet.

His steps to the intercom are slow. Got to keep the pretence, the show. He’s a very efficient actor, the act perfected. So good he forgets sometimes where it ends and where he starts.

He presses his thumb against the button, and Ruby’s face appears on the grainy screen.

“Evenin’,” he says, “can I help you?”

“Let me in, asshole.”

He whacks the gate button and goes to grab his jacket and his wallet.

When he opens the front door, she’s waiting for him, dressed head to toe in leather. His gaze slides down the black sleek material and he blinks.
