CHAPTER SEVEN

“I CAN’T BELIEVE you talked me into this. This is illegal.”

Blythe put her car in park. To avoid her car being seen at the church, she chose to park in the lot behind Miller’s Grocery. The setting sun was nothing but a faint glow in the distance. The stars and moon were already taking the stage as pinpoints of light dotted the darkening sky above. There were no clouds to disrupt the view. It was going to be a beautiful fall night.

“You’re the one that said Allen’s office probably needed to be checked, and you know that place like the back of your hand,” countered Blythe.

Brooke didn’t look convinced. “And why are we doing this instead of Deputy Do-Right?”

Blythe shot her a glare as she double-checked that her phone was on silent. “Stop calling her that. And because she’s completely iced me out of this investigation. I’ve tried telling her about the earrings for the last few days, and she won’t even let me get a word in so this is what she gets. I did tell Mal, though. About the pictures, not us breaking and entering.”

Shaking her head, Brooke zipped up her black hoodie. “You’re going to get me arrested, and she’ll let you off and put my ass under the jail.”

Blythe nodded and shrugged. “Yeah, but she’d probably make me stay in there at least a couple of nights—one for butting in the investigation and one for being with you. So we’d both suffer some. Speaking of Miranda, she said she thought she saw your truck outside her neighbor's house last night. I was there, and when she said that, I went outside to see if it was you, but it was gone.”

Brooke paused, then shook her head. “Wasn’t me. I was home all night.”

Blythe tilted her head and shrugged. “Must be someone else in town with a similar one, then. Are you ready to go?”

“Not really.”

“Well, get ready quick because this is happening.” Blythe opened her car door and slid out.

Brooke followed reluctantly.

The grocery store parking lot was mostly empty save for a couple of employees' vehicles. Blythe cautiously glanced around the lot, noting that no one was around. She hadn’t seen any cameras on the building when they pulled in but wasn’t 100% sure there weren’t any she might have missed. She motioned for Brooke to follow her.

Slipping into the darkness just outside the reach of the parking lot lamps’ glow, they crossed into the small wooded area behind the grocery store. It connected to the cemetery, which was connected to the church. The wooded area was dark, and the new moon could not penetrate the foliage. The trees above still held fall leaves, but enough had fallen to the ground that the pair couldn’t help crunching them with each step. It sounded like an alarm in the canopy of limbs and leaves. Noise always seemed to amplify when you didn’t want it to.

Blythe stopped several feet into the woods, uncomfortable with the foreign territory.
