CHAPTER SEVEN
âI CANâT BELIEVE you talked me into this. This is illegal.â
Blythe put her car in park. To avoid her car being seen at the church, she chose to park in the lot behind Millerâs Grocery. The setting sun was nothing but a faint glow in the distance. The stars and moon were already taking the stage as pinpoints of light dotted the darkening sky above. There were no clouds to disrupt the view. It was going to be a beautiful fall night.
âYouâre the one that said Allenâs office probably needed to be checked, and you know that place like the back of your hand,â countered Blythe.
Brooke didnât look convinced. âAnd why are we doing this instead of Deputy Do-Right?â
Blythe shot her a glare as she double-checked that her phone was on silent. âStop calling her that. And because sheâs completely iced me out of this investigation. Iâve tried telling her about the earrings for the last few days, and she wonât even let me get a word in so this is what she gets. I did tell Mal, though. About the pictures, not us breaking and entering.â
Shaking her head, Brooke zipped up her black hoodie. âYouâre going to get me arrested, and sheâll let you off and put my ass under the jail.â
Blythe nodded and shrugged. âYeah, but sheâd probably make me stay in there at least a couple of nightsâone for butting in the investigation and one for being with you. So weâd both suffer some. Speaking of Miranda, she said she thought she saw your truck outside her neighbor's house last night. I was there, and when she said that, I went outside to see if it was you, but it was gone.â
Brooke paused, then shook her head. âWasnât me. I was home all night.â
Blythe tilted her head and shrugged. âMust be someone else in town with a similar one, then. Are you ready to go?â
âNot really.â
âWell, get ready quick because this is happening.â Blythe opened her car door and slid out.
Brooke followed reluctantly.
The grocery store parking lot was mostly empty save for a couple of employees' vehicles. Blythe cautiously glanced around the lot, noting that no one was around. She hadnât seen any cameras on the building when they pulled in but wasnât 100% sure there werenât any she might have missed. She motioned for Brooke to follow her.
Slipping into the darkness just outside the reach of the parking lot lampsâ glow, they crossed into the small wooded area behind the grocery store. It connected to the cemetery, which was connected to the church. The wooded area was dark, and the new moon could not penetrate the foliage. The trees above still held fall leaves, but enough had fallen to the ground that the pair couldnât help crunching them with each step. It sounded like an alarm in the canopy of limbs and leaves. Noise always seemed to amplify when you didnât want it to.
Blythe stopped several feet into the woods, uncomfortable with the foreign territory.
