Fourteen

8:11 p.m.

Not exactly the hour of the wolf, but close enough that Keo felt a slight shiver race up and down his spine anyway. It’d been too long since he was afraid of the dark. Tonight was a very good reminder that, once upon a time, the night was the enemy, and he’d gone far too long not keeping that in mind.

He waited, because there was nothing left to do. It didn’t help that he was by himself and the forest had gotten chillier since the last time he sat down to wait. How long ago was that? An hour?

No, it hadn’t been more than a few minutes.

Ten minutes, tops.

…maybe more…

He shivered again and pulled his jacket tighter. Christ, what was wrong with him? He was acting like a little boy lost in the woods. He’d done this before.

But what they were about to do wasn’t the problem.

It was the night.

And the lack of silver weapons beside the knife on his left hip.

Despite the AR and the SIG Sauer pistol in its holster, he felt strangely…unarmed. Even naked. It wasn’t a very pleasant feeling.

Goddammit, get your shit together. You’ve done this before.

Yes, he had. It was just that…

Shut it!

He did, and focused on the task at hand.

Men. On foot and on horseback. They had just appeared in his line of sight like they were supposed to. They were still moving casually, not in any hurry. That was good; slow movers made for easier targets.

First a pair of horses, followed by about a dozen on foot, and then the railcar. Moonlight glinted off the faded red paint.

What’s inside that thing?

Again, he thought back to Danny’s story about the U-Haul. If only he could remember what was inside that thing…

Never mind. He’d find out eventually. For now…

He lifted the rifle to take aim.

A figure walked about fifty yards across his iron sights. Not close enough for a confirmed kill shot, but he couldn’t ask for a better would-be first victim.

He squeezed the trigger—pop!—then began pouring lead into the column of men. He didn’t know it would be so satisfying shooting at Shakers, and maybe that was why he nearly emptied the entire magazine from the AR before he knew it.

Some of his rounds pinged! off the metal side of the railcar in the middle. He hadn’t intended that, but had to admit the sound was music to his ears. He threw a few more rounds in its direction just in case.

Ping-ping-ping!

The car didn’t move. The horses dragging it didn’t take off like he’d been expecting. Instead, the animals remained still, seemingly unbothered by the sudden chaos. This, even while the other horses in the caravan tried to buck off their riders in fear.

And yet, the four pulling the railcar never moved.

Now that’s something you don’t see every day.

Keo got up and turned to go. Zip-zip-zip! as return fire ripped into the foliage around him. Most of the rounds didn’t even come close, because the shooters didn’t know where he was or where he’d fired from.
