There was a great multitude of events to attend over the coming months, and Zadie became very comfortable with her role. She was entrusted to speak alone with reporters, and she would often represent her church in Seth’s absence. Though she was extremely busy, she rarely tired of her work, as she was genuinely excited by it. It helped that she was not required to tend to the endless chores and frequent rituals that had consumed her time in the convent.

Each time she attended a political speech, the crowds grew bigger while the detractors faded in significance. The crowd surfing act was quickly established as a mainstay of Baylor’s election rallies, and it became customary for people to arrive hours early to reserve the likely points of Zadie’s entry into the crowd. She came to trust them not to drop her, but there was always a nagging fear that someone would put something unpleasant inside her.

Now and then, Zadie suffered a pang of loneliness. She missed her convent family – especially Lilly. She tried to remedy such feelings by watching Becky’s insider reports, but they lacked the personal touch she needed, and they were mostly concerned with their sexual activities. There were a few broadcasts featuring Lilly, but her anus was filled in each. Zadie used the footage for her private masturbation; she couldn’t deny that Lilly was supremely sexy in her tiny chief servant uniform.

Zadie would have called her friends, but Master Jenson had banned unsupervised phone communication in his convent. Horrified, she had mentioned it to Seth, but he had expressed no interest in intervening in the business of his underlings. Despite the anger and frustration that that had caused her, she found herself sharing more and more moments of tenderness and affection with her master, and she began to wonder if a master-subject relationship could progress on to something more traditional.

After another successful rally, in which Seth had been particularly doting, Zadie took advantage of his good mood and broached the subject.

‘Master,’ she said, ‘is it possible that we could… you know… That I could be more than your assistant?’ She held her breath.

‘What do you mean? Do you want a higher position in the church?’

Zadie felt he must be toying with her. ‘No, no, I’m so grateful to be where I am! I was just—’

‘Wondering if I might ask you out?’

‘Well, no…’ Zadie felt herself blushing. ‘I mean—’

‘You want to ask my hand in marriage?’ he said, tittering at his own wit.

Overwhelmed, Zadie couldn’t think what to say. She stared at the floor, her mouth half-open as though about to speak, but she remained silent, feeling increasingly foolish.

Emitting a sympathetic noise, Seth pulled her to him and embraced her. ‘I’m sorry, I’ll let you speak.’

Her head pressed against his chest, Zadie felt vulnerable, and was only more reticent to voice her thoughts. ‘I was just wondering if there was more I could do for you, Master.’

‘Oh, Zadie, you had me all excited for that?’

‘I’m sorry, Master.’

‘Well,
