Chapter 10

“Attaboy, Roman!” Zarren declared as his raccoon familiar scurried over and hopped into his arms. “I bet you mauled that big, bad dwarf to death, didn’t you?”

“Actually, I think it was a group effort,” I said as I held out my arm for my familiar to land on. “Isn’t that right, Edgar?”

The vulture let out a happy grunt as he landed, while Barut sprang off his back and landed on the ground. I watched the fuzzy spider crawl over to Nivaree and then up the side of her robes, and she gave him a little pat on the head as a reward.

“As much as I would love to revel in our victory,” Elle said. “I don’t think we should stick around for too much longer. More dwarves will be out here at any moment.”

The five of us headed over to the iron cages where the four Domotraus Academy students were being held and promptly saw that there was a massive metal lock on its door.

“Search their bodies,” I said as I pointed at the fallen dwarves. “One of them has to have the key.”

Crimna, Nivaree, and Zarren started to check the bodies while I kept an eye on the cave. It was still quiet, but then one of the male students in the cage began to stir.

“W-what’s going on?” he asked groggily as his eyes flitted open.

“You were captured by dwarves,” I said. “But it’s all good now… We’re looking for the key, then we’ll get you out of here and take you back to Domotraus.”

“Do you remember what happened?” Elle asked. “Before you were knocked unconscious, that is.”

“We were out in the woods looking for our familiars,” the guy said. “Then this green mist surrounded us, and the next thing I know, I’m waking up in this cage right now.”

“Sounds like some sort of sleeping powder,” I said. “What sort of magic do you know? Anything that could help us get you out faster?”

“It won’t do any good,” Elle said. “See those runes on their shackles? Those are anti-magic symbols that negate any spells they’d try to cast.”

“So that’s how they keep their slaves in line,” Nivaree muttered. “They take away their ability to cast.”

“Th-they were gonna make us slaves?” the student gulped.

“Don’t get your boots in a bunch,” Crimna said as she stepped up beside us. “I found the key.”

The orange-and-black-haired woman held up an antique-looking key that was made of the same iron as the rest of the cage. She slid it into the lock, though the metal squealed like it didn’t want to go in. But Crimna gave it a smack, twisted it to the right, and then chortled happily as the latch popped open. She quickly danced out of the way as the door of the cage swung outward with a loud creaking noise.

“Guys!” the student hissed as he nudged the rest of the students. “Wake up. I’m not gonna drag you guys all the way back to the Academy.”

The other three students both stirred slightly, though they were definitely still feeling the effects of the potion.
