Once they arrived at the backhoe, they placed the Sybaris in the bucket of the hoe and secured the first chain under his arms. Ammon could hoist him up enough to attach him to the arm of the backhoe.

They took no chances. Not only were his legs shackled together, they were secured to the backhoe, as were his arms and chest.

Davis raised the arm some to shift the weight in case he woke up. He didn’t want the equipment to tip forward.

Just as they were ready to go, the Sybaris woke.

Darren grabbed the tranquilizer rifle in case the binds didn’t hold. They gave it a few seconds of fight. It looked tight and the backhoe stayed firmly on the ground.

“You know what?” Darren said. “We don’t need his buddies coming just in case they all of the sudden developed a camaraderie.” He set down the rifle and grabbed the tarp. He flapped it out, causing moans of disgust from Davis and Jerad, then standing on the equipment, slightly behind the Sybaris, he draped the tarp over him.

Within moments, the Sybaris calmed down.

“Well, he can’t see us,” Darren said. “Or smell us so … he’s not fighting. Let’s get him back before daylight.”

Once secure, they began the journey back to the warehouses. They were successful in their mission. Hopefully, having the creature in their possession would give them answers on what made their enemy tick, or rather … what would make their enemy fall.
