Chapter Twelve

Alice sat in the dappled sunlight of the conservatory nursing her second cup of tea, not thinking, not doing more than just breathing, and even that felt like it bruised just a little. With the gentle coaxing of the redhead, Fiori, she had managed a little breakfast. Food didn’t interest her a lot at the moment. It was too much of an effort. But at least she felt a little stronger.

She was pretty sure the interrogation would begin soon, and though she dreaded it, she owed these people her life. How they had managed to keep Deacon away from her this long, she couldn’t imagine. It was both a relief and a distress. How could she possibly feel such emptiness without him when he had done such horrendous things to her, had made her do such horrendous things?

She focused on the antics of a robin and the flit and flutter of blue tits and sparrows on the bird feeder outside the conservatory, anything to keep her thoughts from him. Anything. She was still watching the birds when the group that called themselves the Elementals joined her. She had known nothing of them before they had whisked her away from her bungalow, too weak and too frightened to ask questions, and brought her to the safety of Elemental Cottage.

But the last two to enter the room, the pale blonde with dark eyes – eyes much too old for her years – and the bearded man in the black suit, they had been with her before. And the woman … the woman had fought Deacon for her. Alice’s stomach flittered below her ribcage. The woman had fought Deacon and something more, something she couldn’t quite remember, something that made her tingle down low in her belly.

She didn’t know how it could be, but the woman made her feel sexy, beautiful, alive, different from the way Deacon made her feel, like all that drove her sexual hunger had been taken into the sunlight, up high into the brisk fell air and made wholesome again. A stupid thought, and yet it made her almost want to smile, almost want to primp and preen in front of this strange woman. But while the others studied her with interest, not rudely, but surreptitiously, as one does in polite company, the woman gripped the arm of the settee as though she were afraid it would toss her out. She wouldn’t meet Alice’s gaze.

Tara Stone introduced everyone to her but Alice, usually good with names, found that the only one she remembered was Cassandra, who seemed far more uncomfortable than she was, though she couldn’t imagine why. She forced her attention to what Tara was saying.

‘I suppose there’s not too much that shocks you after what you’ve been through, Alice, so if you answer our questions, we’ll do our best to be honest with you as well, even though some of the answers may surprise you. But first we need to know all you know about Deacon.
