St. Patrick's Day

Ireland

I have the lady’s bunkhouse to myself tonight, and I’m grateful for the privacy. The water envelops me in its warm embrace as I close my eyes and sink deeper into the vanilla scented bubbles, feeling the tension from today’s Leprechaun Ride slowly melt away. Even though the ride went off without a hitch, and our guests seemed thrilled with all the treats and prizes we hid along the trail, it left me exhausted.

Later, at our St. Patrick’s Day bash, Lucky stopped by the barn and pulled me to the side. His words are still replaying on an endless loop in my brain: “I’m older, and I’m technically your employer while I’m filling in for Tom. It’s my responsibility to behave professionally,” he said.

And I understand—

Lucky has known Tom for years and he doesn’t want to risk putting him in an awkward position. If we were ever caught kissing, or even holding hands, gossip spreads around here like wildfire. People are so lawsuit happy these days, who knows what could happen? Employers hitting on employees is strictly a no-go, but I can’t stop thinking about Lucky’s kiss.

Harper had the festivities under control, insisted I leave, and talked me into putting my name on the special list tonight. So I marched straight to Laramie’s desk and volunteered for a Private Riding Lesson before I could change my mind. Why not? I’m so wound up and tired of being alone—

If Lucky doesn’t want to be with me, maybe whoever Laramie sets me up with will help me forget him for a few hours.

When I left for work this morning, I packed the new clover printed dress I bought just for our event, but didn’t have time to change into it after this morning’s Leprechaun Ride, so I have something fresh to wear tonight.

I dry off and get dressed quickly, trying to shake off my nerves. Laramie instructed me to stop by my mystery man’s room at eight, which leaves me less than ten minutes to hurry to the main building.

When I reach the lobby, I smooth the front of my pale green dress, take a left into the hallway and hunt for room fifty-two. I’ve never been in this part of the hotel, and the unfamiliarity doesn’t help with my nerves, but I’m determined to go through with this. When I finally find the door, I straighten my shoulders, take a deep breath and knock.

As the knob jiggles, a rush of anticipation blasts through my veins.

“It’s you.” Lucky’s dark fiery eyes meet mine with a mischievous glint. He looks fresh from a shower, perfectly groomed in a white button-down shirt, and his irresistible dimpled grin makes my brain go blank for a second.

Before I can speak, he whisks me into the room with him and closes the door. “Well, isn’t this a surprise?”

“You’re telling me,” I say nervously, grinning ear to ear. His suite is filled with flickering candlelight, casting a warm glow over his features, accentuating his chiseled jawline and piercing gaze.
